Called in on off chance of a meal, it was absolutely crammed with people but really organised I thought, if you were happy to give your name and wait an hour for food with a drink or two then was OK. We were happy and...More

Nice traditional pub in a lovely thatched building. Ploughmans was very tasty and service was courteous and prompt. Ordering system of food in one area and drinks at the bar is slightly confusing but makes complete sense in keeping queues at both under control. If...More

We have been to the Start bay many times when on our hols in Devon and it always does the job. The food is great value and plentiful always served quickly and well presented. The daily fish deals are great and we love the fact...More

You can't book, so get here early if it's a nice day. But even if you can't get a table you can eat outside! Food is well priced, portions are ample and it is tasty, tasty, tasty! The staff are lovely too - a lot...More

Called in at a very busy time and were impressed with the organisation of the lady who seemed to be in charge of front of house. No reservations taken (I think), and she recognised how busy it was and was controlling the table allocation very...More

Decent fish & chips, well priced! Just nowhere to wait for a table & so sort of makes it seem rushed as lots of people hanging around your table

Just disappointing, unfortunately and unusually I can't find a lot to say that's positive..food was below par and it just didn't excite me or my hubby..won't be paying it another visit on our 2018 holiday in the area.

Firstly, what a lovely establishment. Unlike the establishment of marriage I must say. The food was amazing, and the beers were very reasonably priced. After two or three the sound of my wife's voice was dulled to a low drone, which was nice. Service was...More

Portion size is outstanding. You can get a jumbo fish n chips but you must be very hungry. I can eat, and a large one was a struggle for me! Lovely even when busy. Can eat outside or in and even on busy weekend only...More

We visited the Start Bay Inn with three adults and two children. Two of us had fish and chips and one, a vegetarian, had the vegetable goulash. The children ate from the kids menu. The fish and chips were exceptionally good - and the children...More

We stayed outside and all those with dogs did so too. If you want to be inside there are other options in the area

Others replies probably cover the issues raised well enough. I would only add that I would not consider the Inn as providing fully accessible service for the disabled especially as there are internal steps from the family... More

The Start Bay Inn is a family run unspoilt pub right next to the beach which specialises in seafood. It has been run by the Stubbs family since 1977.We serve fish and chips to die for with a portion size to suit any appetite. We also serve an extensive choice of locally caught seafood which is displayed on our specials board. The scallops are hand picked from the Start Bay sea bed by Paul Stubbs the previous Landlord and dressed by either Clair, or Gail his daughters or Stu who are partners in the business. All the crab is dropped off live in the back yard where we dress it. We serve non fish choices with local steaks and burgers being favourites. Vegetarian options are also available.A children's menu is available and if you don't want your little ones having chips again then salad or jacket potato is offered as an alternative. Our sweets cabinet is always well stocked and local ice cream available year round. The bar has a good selection of real ales and local cider and a reasonably priced wine list.Seating is either in the bar where in the winter we have an open fire, the children's room or outside on the patio on the sea front. We pride ourselves on reasonably priced generous portions with good service by happy staff. We are not a restaurant or a gastro pub. We are an honest pub serving good food at reasonable prices which is why we are busy.
