Xenia is a sacred and ancient tradition in Greece, Zafira and Christos epitomise that tradition. Very welcoming and friendly people to be around they serve delicious food at a very fair price. A must if you like Greek food and are staying in Rethymnon.

You can eat everywhere in Rethymno. But there is only one place where you can feel at home and deeply comfortable: Taverna Crete. The place seems simple but it's well furnished and very comfortable, from the chair to the fork. The food is excellent nad...the atmosphere wonderful. But more than the quality of food (which, I repeat, is really tasty) is the presence of Zafiris and, most of all, Christos. You are not a customer; you are a guest. When you enter at Taverna Crete, you don't enter a restaurant but Zafiris' and Christos' house. And they treat you with the ancient greek sense of hospitality. It's not just a matter of eating; it's a question about feeling satisfied, welcomed, spoilt and, in the end, happy of having had such an experience.More

Only ate here once during our stay this year but it is a very friendly place in which to eat. As it tends to have a number of nationalities dining here many of whom smoke we try and get an outside table. As it tended...to be very busy we did not manage to achieve this when we called in to dine so simply have it a miss. The food is always plentiful and the staff friendly. Often the place opposite has entertainment so the music can be enjoyed from this restaurant. What erks me is why smokers who have this unsocial habit feel it's okay to inflict their smoke on fellow diners throughput their meal. Fortunately this does not happen in the UKMore

We stumbled across this restaurant on our first night as we arrived very late and our hotel was nearby, but the owner welcomed us in and we could have sat there all night and he wouldn't have kicked us out (well he might have done...- lovely guy!) and we realised we'd found a lovely little Taverna. Theres a reason this place gets sooo busy! At the quieter end of the prom - opposite end to the harbour BUT well worth a short taxi ride.... A genuinely traditional feel in every way, decor, hospitality and general laid-back Greek atmosphere. This place gets very busy (as do the other 2 restaurants on the road), serving a brilliant selection of tasty traditional Greek / Cretan (which id highly recommended), through to delicious pizzas and meat dishes, complimentary starters, fruits and aperitifs to finished, NOTHING is too much trouble, nothing is pushy and prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and portion sizes - be warned! The owner is both a character and lovely guy - we ate here twice but the second time he remembered us straight away, very genuine! High recommend a visit - 5 stars!More

To escape the wind that would've made sitting out and eating at one of the many tavernas on the coast road uncomfortable, we went to Crete Taverna which is situated a few minutes walk off the main coast road for an evening meal. I had...chicken souvlaki and my girlfriend had moussaka with not too many chips or rice etc. The kebab was made with big lumps of chicken and was served with a very nice tabbouleh. With the bill, we were treated to complimentary orange cake and raki. The service was very good and everyone there seemed to be having a good time. It's a shame that the taverna is tucked away and will probably go unnoticed by a lot of people, but then maybe that is part of its charm.More

I visited this restaurant in June during my trip to Crete, it was towards the end of my holiday and I just wish we had found it earlier! The souvlaki was amazing with a good selection of vegetables and potatoes not just chips like you...seem to get elsewhere. The restaurant is a little off the beaten track but well worth a visit, I preferred it here to other restaurants we visited on the main seafront and the owner was really friendly. Head along the seafront to the Esperia beach hotel and turn right up the road, a couple of minutes walk and you are there. Would definitely recommend and go back if we visit the area in the future.More
