We were just passing through, enjoying a little exploration of eastern Crete before hitting the road to Heraklion and an evening meal at our hotel. It was our first time in Crete, and we were enjoying typical Greek hospitality wherever we went. If you’ve never...been to Greece, let me tell you their countrymen set the bar pretty high when it comes to being hosts. And the experience at Faros is a perfect example.
We ordered a couple of cold beers and a portion of moussaka between us to keep the edge off our hunger. It was delicious, and we said so to our friendly host. He told us proudly that his father-in-law had first opened this beachside restaurant in 1978, and it was still as popular as ever, even though so many other eating places had sprung up around them in the intervening years. No doubt the reason for that ongoing success is due in part to the excellent cuisine, but we also noted father-in-law was still keeping an eye on the business, helping out by cleaning the tables.
It’s when someone goes the extra mile that impresses the most. Our little bit of business only brought him 15 euros, yet our host insisted on giving us some complimentary fresh fruit. That’s the sort of kindness that he would probably offer a couple enjoying a full meal each, so we found it touching to receive such generosity. But this is what I mean about Greek hospitality, and if anyone wishes to find a great place to eat by a beach in Agios Nikolaos, this one should tick all your boxes!More
We came after a recommendation by a local and we were not disappointed. We loved our lunch here with our three kids. The food was delicious and the waiters were attentative and very friendly.
We had a mixed starter and a selection of fresh seafood...for mains. Wonderful!More
Beautiful position, right on the beach. The food was amazing, the fish was so fresh, we had many starters and each one was better than the one before we couldn’t believe it. The house wine was wonderful too. Everyone was so generous and served us...plenty of delicious desserts. I couldn’t fault the service at all! They were so friendly and made us feel at home. Can’t wait to go back again.More
Visited last night, after a local recomendation. The setting and service is great. The starter of marinated anchovies was amazing.
Pork souvlaki was great however the moussaka was lacking flavour which was disappointing.
Very good value for money and worth a visit.
We thought Faros looked nice - right by a small beach with kids playing harmlessly in a municipal playground nearby. We thought the waiter odd by wearing a face mask under his chin, but we’d had a long walk and as suckers for seats that...have cushions, we went in.
Forgive the diatribe, but...
Food: We had mixed starter comprising Tzatziki, Hummus, Garlic paste, Olive paste, Taramasalata and Feta with bread seemingly freshly baked the day before.
For mains, we had Sardines which were cooked on an open grill but uninspiring. These came with the only side option of baked potato. We also had Stifado which - whilst admittedly tasty - was served in a dish not much larger than a fingerbowl.
The baked potato accompaniment was plonked with a grunt on the table by the waitress about 15 mins prior to the sardines’ arrival so were cold by the time we sliced them open.
Staff: Facecoverings are worn under the chin or not at all by most staff. An elderly couple (who we assumed to be Owner and his Wife) wandered around and seemed to confuse the waiter & waitress (who we assume to be the Son and his Wife).
Service: Brusque. Inattentive.
Price: Higher than some in the area but for no reason.
Cleanliness: Clean; especially the loos. Tables sanitised after all diners. Odd about the loose and flagrant disregard regarding Government requirements surrounding facecoverings for servers.
Verdict: The stray cats enjoyed the meal more than we did. It’s a shame as this obviously used to be a good place but probably needs the Grandson (we assume it was he manning the grill) to take over and reenergise the business.More
We were persuaded to go into the restaurant with the promise that if we didn’t enjoy the food we wouldn’t pay. We were served food that we hadn’t ordered and when we told staff we were ignored. The food was disgusting. We left most of...it and fed what we could to the cats. When we politely told the owner we were not happy we were accused of trying to eat for free and shouted at. We paid for the food and left hungry and went to eat elsewhere where we were treated well. Avoid this place, the food and staff are revoltingMore
