The portions were very small, the food was cold and of average quality. Even though we were the only customers the service was very slow. Expensive compared to other restaurants in Athens and what they offered.

We went there for dinner and we picked this establishment for the location. The location is excellent and this is the only postive. Prices are outrageous. We paid Euro 54.5 for 2 soups, one salad (without cheese and 3 desserts. Did not have wine or beer (only 1 Ouza that the staff said was on teh house but actually was... More

I can only assume that the staff at the Diogenes didn't really want to be there. We chose the Diogenes because we had never been to this restaurant in Plaka and it had always appeared busy when we had passed it. However, when we visited it this December, it was quiet but even so, the service left womething to be desired.... More

My husband and I arrived in Athens after a long day travelling and were famished. This restaurant was one of the closest to our hotel and looked inviting - outdoors, under trees etc. I can't recall exactly what we ordered but one dish was lasagne (or moussaka). The food took a long time to arrive and because I was watching... More

We discovered the Taberna Diogenes while searching for a restaurant around the Lysikrates monument. The taberna had the most charming appearance of all of the places we saw, so we decided to try it and were not disappointed. The atmosphere is elegant, cozy, and rustic. We had the entire restaurant to ourselves for 2 hours. The staff were very kind... More

Went here for lunch one afternoon to try something different and found it to be one of the worst places in the whole of Athens. The waiters were slow, dull and not very helpful at all. The food was poor and advertised differently to what was brought out to us. When we had our food put in front of us... More

I ordered veal and they served me pork. When I double checked the waiter swore it was veal. I do not recommend this place.

Had dinner here a few nights ago, and it was excellent. The Eggplant appetizer, and the Salad was excellent. Two of us had the Lamb in a Casserole and it was tasty and tender. One of the Gals had a veal chop, and she said it was the best she ever had, including the way it was grilled. She proved... More

Locals presence is important for us, there were lots of locals. Service was good. Traditional Greek cuisine, very delicious, with uozo and wine, we payed 25 EUR per person, it was surprisingly low. I suprised by the bad reviews, it's our 4th time in Athens and we can definitely recommend the place.

Diogenes makes for a very pleasant stop while strolling la Plaka. Some visitors say it's not gastronomy; they are right, but it is a damned pleasant place overlooking a square with a small garden and no car passing by, no horn blowing. Only birds in the trees chatting endlessly. The staff arranged a long table for our party, quickly adjusted... More

Staying in Plaka

Neighbourhood Profile
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
