Alberto and the guys work exceptionally hard to provide a high standard of service. We have visited this restaurant many times with family and friends and can highly recommend the food and ambience in old town Funchal. Always a warm welcome which is why we...go back time and time again.More

Awful food. Pasta overcooked, cheapest bread that was impossible to eat, acid beef carpaccio. But the worst - unfriendly staff, felt like we were bothering them. Don’t recommend!

Seafood was amazing. Specially the octopus is the best i have ever eaten. The staff is very professional and really very friendly. We ate here every day of our holidays and really loved it. Manja

Despite being extremely busy Alberto is very obliging in explaining the dishes on the menu and Ernesto and the kitchen are producing lovely fresh food cooked to order. After such a long time since our last trip we were amazed that Antonio remembered our preferences...and even the amount of sugar with coffee. We have had two beautiful meals so far this holiday and we certainly will be having more. If you like fish the caldeirada and the cherne are recommended. Booking is essential if you want to be sure of a table. I must add that Carlos makes a really good cup of coffee.More

Post Covid, the same friendly staff, the same chef, and the same excellent food at the same prices. This is one of our favourite restaurants in Madeira, and it was great to be back dining on the terrace. I had the catch-of-the-day, a perfectly grilled...piece of stone-bass. My wife had the prawns in champagne sauce - large, fat and juicy and as good as she remembered. The restaurant was full but the service was friendly and efficient. This is one of the most authentic restaurants in the Old Town with excellent local food and a good range of inexpensive wines. Give it a try.More

Full disclosure, my partner and I have waited 3 years to return to this place, so the expectations were very high. And as before (2015, 2018) we returned this month to the warmest of hospitality. Choosing O Portao over the other choices in old town...is interesting given that there is both a walk up business, and those who reserve ahead. This is a small business working very hard to recover from the last year and a half. The food is great and the service is exceptional. Those who question the service may be walking up to each table being filled, and four wait staff doing everything possible to keep everyone happy. Not easy. Try and reserve ahead if you can. I commend the owner, the gentlemen who serve, and the chef. We very much appreciated the ambiance and warmth extended to us as we shared a meal. Obrigad!!More

Lovely meal and attentive staff in the pretty old town. Sirloin and steak diane both very tasty. The waiter with glasses was very pleasant and attentive. They gave us a free Maderia wine to finish off. Nice touch.

We found the restaurant at 14:15, not realising that lunch time closing was 15:00. This however was not a problem to the excellent waiters. We ordered limpets and mussels to start, along with a glass of poncha each. All absolutely delicious, not a scrap left...on either plate. For our main meals we had Octopus and Scabbard fish with passion fruit, almonds and banana. Both absolutely delicious. The flavours were truly amazing. The prices were very reasonable and the food quality was exceptional. We could not have been made to feel more welcome and we highly recommend this establishment.More
