Ajilo Shrimp swimming in a cast iron dish of butter, parsley, sliced garlic and a hint of pepper was heavenly. Then the sliced Iberian Ham was mouth watering. The dry local Rose wine compliments the entire dish. The extra special treat was the pork and mushroom risotto. So palette pleasing. Wow, was I glad we stopped in this place. The staff... More

We ended up eating here twice during our week long stay in Lisbon since it was very close to our apartment rental. In Lisbon, it is somewhat difficult to find decent vegetarian choices on the menu. There are only two options (Mushroom Risotto and Veggie Lasagna), but they both are tasty. My husband was also happy with the fish dishes... More

Pretty easy to find from Baixa-Chiado metro stop; of course an uphill walk. Seafood Risotto excellent. Mushroom Risotto and pork very tastey. Tried the Pica pau beef with batatas fritas; meat tender; sauce tastey. Good sangrias.

We only had 1 night in Lisbon & were looking forward to a good, authentic Portuguese meal. We were not disappointed at Restaurante Carmo, which happened to be next door to our hotel. Starting with a delicious & rich cabbage soup (caldo verde), we followed with a sampling of Portuguese appetisers & a nice bottle of local red wine. Only... More

Ate at Carmo on our first night in Lisbon. The restaurant was very close to our apartment and with jet lag, the perfect choice. The restaurant is located on a charming historic square in Chiado. The restaurant has a farmhouse old world feel and the staff was great. Our waitress, Sara Lee, could not have been any nicer. The food... More

Amazing risotto!!! Full of flavor and not overly filling like risotto can sometimes be. Our kids loved it as well. We tried the vegetable lasagna which was good just very heavy so beware! The cheese plate was also very good with a nice selection of cheeses. They are kid friendly but no high chairs. We sat outside and truly enjoyed... More

I have 2 rules for dining out: no photos of food in menus, and no one standing on the street trying to persuade you to come in. That can make dining out in downtown Lisbon tough. I went for dinner on my first night in Lisbon, before I was comfortable finding my way around, saw these good reviews, and popped... More

I have visited some restaurants these days in Lisbon and - I'm not glad to say - this one has not yet achieved the quality of excellence at all. The waitress was very attentive. Wine menu is very good too. But the food... the dishes were not impressive neither tasty; they weren't bad, just quite normal. Desserts??? Disappointing.

We ate here our first night on the recommendation of our hotel and loved loved loved the garlic shrimp appetizer that came out sizzling hot and full of garlic. Prices were very reasonable for the quality. We started to eat at the sister restaurant the next night and decided after the wine and appetizer (one tiger shrimp that looked close... More

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
