They have a VISA sign but don't take it. The Fado felt fake. Food was OK. Good sales job to get you in the door - but there are better choices!

Looking for a place to hear Fafo and eat dinner, my friends and I ducked into Restaurante Maria da Fonte after being unnecessarily detained with the hope of a table somewhere else. The host and staff are very friendly, the Fado singers were talented and engaging, and even the host sings! The octopus rice was warm and delicious! Forget the... More

Whilst doing a walking tour we were advised that if wished a true fado experience to go where the locals go. We found this little restaurant and were welcomed by a lovely gentleman at the door. The restaurant had a few locals coming and going throughout the evening. The fado experience was quite powerful as I felt that we were... More

We has a lovely Birthday celebration for my husband! Second FADO experience and although they weren't the best singers, the kindness and attention made us feel like rock stars. We had a nice selection of appetizers and Sangria and wonderful entree. It was an unforgettable night!

It is worth visiting the place for authentic fado. We were with a bunch of locals, no tourists. Food was OK, wine was the usual house wine quality from this kind of place.

Awful. The french fries were grissy. Sardines smelled old. The waitress was rude and the fado singers couln' t do their job. Yuk! And too pricey.

First of all, we read the reviews after we had made the reservations for the New Year dinner 2015. We were terrified when we read it,and I honestly don't know if our expectations were so low, that at the end we ended up enjoying the place (not necessarily the food). Regarding the music and the atmosphere, we found that the... More

If you want to have a Fado experience designed strictly for tourists this is your place. You will be greeted outside by a staff member who will press the menu on you so you can see what the food is like. This is only representative of what the food is "like" because once inside the edit takes place when the... More

My research suggested this was the best area in Lisbon to experience Fado. Unfortunately, the most recommended venue was full and I went here. It was clear that prices were about 50% more than other restaurants I had visited; but given the Fado performance, this was perhaps not unreasonable. However, the pressure to buy snacks/starters was greater than elsewhere and... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
