We entered to Baleal as if through a time machine. half a dozen waiters, quite aged, simple tables with white paper tablecloth on top. Bread with the regular 2 types of cheese were immediately brought. The alentajo white wine was wisely recommended. Took the pata negra and grilled shrimps for starters then continued to the local Feijuada. All tasty and... More

So... as long as you love garlicky food, you will not be disappointed. Anything with fish is great but beware the bones! Portions are large (like American large). Service is good, but old school (with some good old tricks to give you nibbles for the table that you will have to pay later). Ambiance is very traditional. Dorada is great!

OK but our shared dish was nothing special. We made reservations online but the waiters didn't even ask for a name. They offered us a couple of different tables. It was Saturday night and we prefer not to sit near large groups. No luck. At least they were mostly "locals" and I take that as a good sign. We should... More

When I go to Lisbon, I make it a point to try new restaurants, but there are a couple I can't skip. This is one of them. When I first discovered this place a few years ago, I almost walked away because the entrance didn't really look like a restaurant (more like a seafood store). What my wife and I... More

We were recommended this place by the hotel concierge. A bit scary when we entered and couldn't read the menu. But with the assistance of Google we found two amazing dishes. Great price, nice house wine. Don't be put off by the exterior!

We have reviewed this place on tripadvisor and went to check: easily found, not overcrowded but still there were people in low season, grilled sardines were really good, friendly waiter but too pushy to make us try something else we don't order, salad or cheese- they are not free, if you try you will have to pay for them((

We were advised to go to this restaurant. On arriving, we hesitated to enter coz the entrance was not that nice. A very friendly waiter advised us about what to eat and to drink. He was very honest advising me to take a half portion which was more than sufficient. The wine was also very good for a very good... More

Hidden up the Rua de Madalena, a short walk from the centre, is this unpretentious restaurant which you may miss unless you keep your eyes open. Inside, though, it is so different. Busy, buzzing with life - locals and tourists together - a mainly Portugese menu which is well cooked and presented, portions plentiful, served by waiters anxious to try... More

First of all: Don't get confused with some very high prizes in the menu. You can order normal dishes and you can buy seafood (e.g. tiger prawns, that cost 69€/kilo).The menu just doesn't say it that clear. We came to that very lovely restaurant by its good rating. We were a little sceptic at the beginning. It's a room that... More

Place isn't that great as the reviews suggest. Food is average. Prices on the menu appear reasonable (they are quite reasonable for the quantity actually), but you're charged a lot more for the butter, bread, etc on the side. Added quite a bit to my bill. The two stars for the friendly and helpful staff though.

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
