We were recommended to go to Alpendre for the fish and the typical food. The experience was fun, in the rows of tables, crazy waiters, not much english spoken, food moving fast, brighter family restaurant. For us, the food was too heavy or too salty or too much bread, (in the soup), The fried cod was almost inedible by our... More

One of our best meals here. Unpretentious And authentic Portughese food. Go early , before 8pm, as it fills up quickly . Some obnoxious tourists, not willing to wait for their food left grumbling but we persevered and it was worth the wait. Squid , tender and succulent, accompanied by beautifully cooked potatoes and broccoli. Baccalau , fresh and flavourful.... More

There are a lot of restaurant choices in Lisbon and this was our first experience. Every aspect of this restaurant left a smile on our face, from the wonderful and playful service to the delicious food and great atmosphere. Antonio our waiter deserves a special mention as he really made our evening. Our lack of Portuguese and his little English... More

Alpendre was one of our favorite restaurants in Lisbon. To begin with the staff is fabulous – making jokes and making the whole dining experience a complete enjoyment. But even without the staff, the food spoke for itself. We started with our usual sangria – and it was quite good. For food – my husband had the garlic shrimp and... More

We were recommended this place as being off the tourist route. Certainly it was full of locals and looks very "no frills". Our food and was excellent and the service good if you don't mind being constantly ribbed and teased. It was funny to begin with but the joke did wear a bit thin after a while. To be honest... More

I had the shrimp salad and grilled grouper. Antonio was my waiter and did a fantastic job, great sense of humor. This is a cute little restaurant just off the street. There are a lot of seats in here and it can be warm but the small menu is very good. Would absolutely come back again sometime.

Back in the city after a couple of years I was keen to revisit this nice family run place. Prawns with garlic, muscles with onions and Shrimp Soup excellent. If you fancy some meat, that's very good too. Pork with cockles comes with nice home fries. A mention for the steak on a hot stone, excellent meat that cooks in seconds... More

This is simple Portuguese cooking at great prices. The waiting staff were friendly, helpful and good fun. They recommended a great wine to go with our food. I had steak on a hot stone which was a good theatre dish with great quality meat (very filling) and my partner had sea bass which was beautifully fresh, well cooked and full... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
