Located in the heart of the historical district. Two small halls and an esplanade. The cuisine used to be very tasty and cooked in the traditional Portuguese way. Today, it's just one more of the many tourist spots that are lined in the street. Too much noise, not so much quality. It has lost its genuine popular charm. Staff is... More

The couple we traveled with prefer much more discreet, hometown places to eat--but even they admitted this was a good experience and not overpriced. The four of us ate our fill and a bottle of wine for under $60E. We won't be back--but glad we were there once.

The location is very convenient as it is begins a long line of restaurants that run along this street. Food was generally above average but not particularly memorable. Don't bother with their cod cakes because the likelihood of finding any cod inside was non existent when we dined there. More like mashed potato cakes. Sea bass was well cooked and... More

We enjoyed lunch sat outside. Portuguese swordfish, sardines and steak with fries. Service was quick and friendly and the good was good and plentiful - with drinks it cost around 35 euros. There is no children's menu but we asked for a small steak and they obliged, charging just 6 euros Menus are available in lots of different languages. One... More

This place was recommended by our tour guide, Jorge, as providing decent food, friendly service and good value. He wasn't wrong. In a pedestrianised street of many similar establishments this was the only one not actively touting for business, hardly surprising as it was practically full. Always a good sign. An extensive menu, in 9 languages, it isn't exciting but... More

Another good Rough Guide tip. From the outside, Joao looks pretty unremarkable, lying at the northern end of a street full of competitors, who were all vociferously looking to hook in the customers. Joao, it must be said, were far more understated, and that's no bad thing. Inside, the restaurant's decor is similarly bland, but stay with it: its edge... More

This restaurant is located at the end of Rua dos Correeiros, maybe the the street with the most number of restaurants per km in whole of Lisbon as it is lined with restaurants on both sides practically from the Praca do Comercio near the Arco of Rua Augusta to Rossio. As such it is not different from all other restaurants... More

I ate grilled octopus with green beams. Very delicious. Staff was so kind and helpfull. After too many rude people i met in Lisbon. They changed my mind about locals. Prices are avarage and you won't have fear that they are gonna cheat you. Good people ...

Nice waiters, but we got a bread basket which was already half eaten. They said sorry and replaced. Food was very basic. Just to fill stomach, nothing else.

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
