In the downtown area at the end of the Baixa, where all the long, straight avenues terminate next to the Tejo (Tagus) in the Praca do Comercio, sits this 250 year old establishment that boasts being Lisbon’s oldest cafe (actually a restaurant). It has strong...literary connections and the interior is breathtaking, like a Belle Epoque Parisian cafe filmset….. Now, to the food…..my wife, son and I turned up on a very quiet Thursday night and sat outside. The staff were lovely, the owner charming and loquacious. The wine list is quite good, the prices fair but the food acceptable if not remarkable. Of course this was based on just one visit. The cataplana (fish stew) that my wife and I shared was a bit under-seasoned with some fairly chewy fish. Our son’s Bacalhau a bras (salted cod with eggs and potatoes) a bit bland. It needed a bit more garlic and incredibly, salt too. But his chocolate mousse dessert was good. We’ll give it another go sometime soon… Maybe a bit too much style over substance.More

Worst experience in Lisboa. Such a shame for such an historical place. The coffee (powder ?) was horrible. Was it prepared before Pessoa’s death ???

It was lunchtime on a weekday at the time of our arrival. The staff seated us quickly at a nice table and our waiter made us excellent recommendations. In terms of portion, the meals are huge therefore one must order with caution. A meal for...two would probably feed 4 people. In terms of quality, it was out of this world. Muito obrigado por tudo. Quando estivermos na cidada novamente, voltaremos com certeza. O seu restaurante é imperdível em Lisboa!More

A lovely reminder of what a proper restaurant used to be: very good food, an excellent wine list, and just pray that your waiter is Sr. Martins. The soups are wonderful. The "dourada" at our first lunch was one of the best we have had....The wine was served at the right temperature and always just at the right time. The conversation with Sr. Martins was a memorable blend of experience, competence and humour. The place knows how to treat its customers even in Covid times. It feels a little like stepping back in time, yet it was exactly what we needed to appreciate what we have today. Thank you to the chef, Sr. Martins and the brave owner who keeps the place alive.More

Visited this cafe for lunch purely because it was recommended by food blogger Mark Wiens...it is also the oldest cafe in Lisbon, so has a historical place in Lisbons cultural heritage. The service was exceptional, the waiters were polite and courteous and the food was...very good. The menu were printed in Portuguese and English and wasn't too extensive. A good variety of dishes was still available though to suit a variety of tastebuds. A nice, pleasant place to rest for a break from all the sightseeing. Definately one not to miss.More

We ordered Bacalao with rice and Brazilian Feijoada. The bacalao was OK, not great, edible but tasteless. The feijoada was an insult. First, it was cold, so we returned it to be heated up. Then, the "meat" was not meat, but pig skin and fat,...something you do not give even to dogs to eat. We left all of it on the plate and when the waiter cleared the table, he asked how it was. We stated to tell that it was not good and he did not even listen, quickly cleared the table and left. Then another waiter brought us the desert menu and we obviously did not want anything else from this place but this waiter kept insisting on us having desert or coffee. Our experience there was really bad and do not recommend this place at all.More

On our first trip to Lisbon our guide recommended we visit Martinho da Arcada and we were not disappointed. Wonderfully atmospheric location, excellent local cuisine, interesting wines and brilliant service provided by the kind generous staff. Casa fundada em 1782!! We'll definitely be back.

Our local guide pointed out this gem of a restaurant. Good food served simply in an authentic setting and friendly, welcoming staff - no wonder this restaurant has survived and continues to be revered by the locals.

They tell me it was founded in 1782 and certainly the building and restaurant are old and full of character. Quite a formal welcome and service but very proper. Very good food even though we just had a lunchtime snack. I think many locals ate...there.More

Nice place - roomy - good food. All very mature waiting staff. The food was excellent and quite pricy. Asked for a glass of wine and was presented with half a bottle. No wine by the glass. We had the fejoida which was delicious but...should have been warmer. Overall, a good experience but tough on the holiday budget.More
