Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Each of the seven times during the past decade we have visited Ferragudo, my wife and I have always made it a point to take the water taxi to Portimao to have dinner at Dona Barca, a most wonderful seafood restaurant. It is our belief...that if it is a favourite for the local Portuguese population; it must be very good. We have been amazed that there are other seafood restaurants located in the same area, Dona Barca is by far the busiest; often with queues of people waiting for a table. My wife and I love grilled sardines so each time we visit, we pretty much order the same we have done previously; couvert of bread, butter, and olives, six wonderful grilled sardines (€8.00) accompanied by boiled potatoes and the Algarvian salad (€3.50) which is absolutely delicious as well as a few cold draft beers. Our total bill has never been more than €32.00. The service is also very friendly, professional and very efficient. The restaurant is laden with nice blue wooden tables and offers a great friendly atmosphere.More

The food was probably the best I’ve had in the Algarve and not expensive at all! We ate here as a party of four without a reservation and still got a table within a couple of minutes. We had fish, king sized prawns and mussels...- everything was excellent. The waitresses were extremely friendly and helped us decide on what to eat. We will definitely be back!More

Very disappointing. We asked for sea bass and was told that the smallest available was 4kg .At 49 euros per kg that would have cost almost 200 euros!!We then asked for sea bream but told “It’s over”.We settled for steak (which was nothing special).I asked for...a small bottle of white wine. The waitress spoke little English and I ended up with a jar of unpleasant wine which was lukewarm. Unsurprisingly, the eight people on the next table took one look at the expensive fish prices and promptly left.More

We were sent here by a friend, not the best place where we have eaten in Portimão but fish was good and fresh. Service was nice . ONE THING that I will never forget … Sardine pâté in a box !!!! Remove that from the menu...if you don’t have a fresh one. It makes you look SO bad. And cheap !More

Wonderful staff and food. Picking your dinner from a ice display out front was special. We had the catimpulano. ( fish stew) for 2 people. Delicious! Friendly and helpful staff. Just a bit difficult to find due to street being raised to meet a bridge.

Found this place while exploring around the Old Bridge and were attracted by the whole staff sitting having their meal in preparation for lunchtime opening. So we booked a table and came back an hour later and the place was pretty close to being full....Blackened Pork and Mackerel barbecued on their external barbecue were delightfully tasty and hearty portions too. Certainly recommend this as a lovely place to have a traditional Portuguese meal.More

Fabulous restaurant. Great prices and really fresh fish. The prices are very honest. We had a late lunch there around 3pm and we were happily surprised with the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food. My husband is vegetarian and they went...out of their way to cook something for him. For me; the sardines and potatoes were delicious . The children had seafood stew and the other one prawns and it was really lovely too. It located under a bridge and to be fair all the other little restaurants near this one seamed equally lovely. I would recommend a visit!More

This place is recommended to us by a friend from Portimao, who told us that this is where locals go for seafood. Somehow there seems to be a cluster of seafood restaurants in the neighborhood, but some of them are empty, with eager smiling ladies...inviting you to go inside. Dona Barca not only has a bustling full house, they apparently spill over to another space across the alley. Even without my friend's recommendation it's clear which restaurant to go to. They sure do know how to cook their fishes. The sole we ordered was done to perfection, the meat still moist and tender. We also ordered the seafood rice. Sadly, maybe due to inflation, there was way more rice than seafood, and the broth tastes of tomato rather than the ocean's bounty. Friendly service, menu in multiple languages.More

Throughout our travels; my wife and I always search to find what restaurants the local populace frequently dines at; for it is our belief that if the locals love the place; it must be great! So is the case for Dona Barca. During the past...decade, my wife and I have dined at Dona Barca on about 10 separate occasions. We are often amazed that although there are seafood restaurants located in the same area, there is always a queue outside Dona Barca waiting for a table. Each of the times we visited, my wife also order the same items; couvert of bread, butter, carrots and olives; six wonderfully grilled sardines (€8.00); accompanied by boiled potatoes and Algarvian salad (€3.50) which is absolutely delicious. We also had three small beers between us and our total bill was only €32.00; a great value for a wonderfully delicious meal. The service at the beginning was great; the waiter was very attentive and our drinks and food were ordered and prepared quickly. However, once we had completed our meal, we probably waited a total of 30 minutes to get the bill; mostly due to the rapid increase of customers and attending to their needs.More

Without going too much in detail, there are few reasons why you should not consider this restaurant: - same person that traps you to dine there is rushing you for the end, for next falling rabbits, not even a good night -extremely overpriced fish.. never...I ate so expensive fish and I’m Portuguese. just 1 single grilled fish cost us €60 - the sides for the fish was a laugh, 1 small portion of small potatoes and 1 small tomato pepper salad. My husband could eat all that alone. - too overcrowded, a restaurant that works to steal your wallet not to offer you a good experience - and for last, there’s a gentleman that looks like the leader of the mafia, seated on a huge desk , all times, presume is manager or owner, instead of greeting his customers. Literally looks like is just there to receive the big bucks. Shame because this behaviour doesn’t reflect real hospitality in Portugal.More

Dona Barca Restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel staff. If we hadn’t asked, we wouldn’t have found this local gem of a fish restaurant. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. He helped us to choose our fish. It was prepared in the outside...cooking station, before he deboned and served it to us at our table. The meal was fresh and tasty. Good selection of drinks and relaxed environment.More
