We arrived in Amsterdam late in the day and found this cosy restaurant close to our studio apartment. Although we had expected to be told "no room" we were made very welcome among the full house. It was most encouraging to learn that all meals apart from the obvious (bread, samosa, etc) are gluten free as one of us needed... More

We found a little ad for Shah-Jahan on our Amsterdam city map. It was walking distance from the central train station, so we strolled over. The staff were so welcoming, friendly and helpful with describing the menu items. We shared palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, chicken tikka, samosa, lamb bhuna, pilau rice and garlic naan bread. It was two of... More

Second visit and very pleased. We had chicken tiki masala and shrimp vindaloo. We misjudged and ordered a little too hot (ordered 4 which was standard for dishes) and was a bit hot but very tasty. Excellent service and atmosphere. Served complimentary appetizer of thin bread in dipping sauces and nice touch.

Tucked away in a cosy Jordan neighbourhood this relatively small restaurant seems promising at a first glance. Unfortunately, it is yet another tourist trap. Dishes seem hastily prepared (only seem so, because we've waited 50 minutes to get them), and are very far from satisfactory. While sizzled lamb was tolerable, the chicken dishes would be keen to use much more... More

We enjoyed a good meal on our last night in the city. The restaurant is off the beaten path for most tourists and seems to serve the locals. Good wine selection and well prepared dishes served in a professional fashion. Good bet if you enjoy Indian cuisine!

Very cozy place, friendly service and very tasty food. Great value for money. Not far from key tourist areas and yet not overcrowded and not a touristy place.

We had read a lot of good comments about this restaurant, but we left with a totally different view to those comments! Starter was good enough,we went for the mixed plate, then for mains I went for the tandoori mixed grill which was an absolute mess, swimming in a mass of soggy onion, the only piece recognisable being a lone prawn, the rest, chicken lamb... Either indoor or outside seating is available here. We chose inside, and it became busy and crowded, but in a good way. As people joined others already seated, the tables were added, a single moved to accommodate others, a friendly vibe. Looking at my receipt from dinner, 46 euros, we were treated to Chicken Pakora, Tandooti Prawns, Tarka Dal, Naan,... More

Staying in Jordaan

Neighbourhood Profile
Jordaan
One of Amsterdam’s most preferred outdoor markets and some of the city’s favorite watering holes are but two of the many reasons to save ample time for a stroll through this especially convivial warren of narrow streets with its unfair share of quirky shops and quality galleries. Historically a haven for the working class and emigrants, these days the Jordaan is better known as an enclave for artists and designers. As popular as the Jordaan is as a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, the area never feels particularly touristy or overrun with outsiders. A highlight even for long-time Jordaan residents, be sure to accept any invitation to step within one of the area’s beloved courtyards or to have a sneak peek inside one of its many working studios.
