On a December rainy evening, I had a business dinner this quaint little French bistro, tucked away in an alley that dead-ended at a canal in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Much to my surprise, venison was offered as a selection with house pairings. The meal was very high quality and nicely presented. The wait staff was attentive and cordial. Prices are modest.... My wife and I ate here for my birthday in Jan 2017 and had the 3 course Truffle set menu. Superb, well cooked food in a delightful environment. Well priced for the high quality food and service, and far enough away from the usual Amsterdam tourists to be peaceful and enjoyable.

The worst thing you can say about the place is that it is difficult to find: you do not expect there is a restaurant at the end of the short, small, secluded and partially closed walkway to the water. Once you are there, you immediately know you found a good place: attentive service by the waiters, a menu which surprises... More

We went with 7 people for the truffelmenu, we had an onlinediscount which made it from 100 EU to 50. The location is beautiful, typical amsterdam, all different levels, small cozy. The view on the water and damrak is stunning. The truffels menu, it was nice. Not spectacular, a lot of truffels and after 5 dishes we all had.. enough.... More

I have been here about 3-4 times on business dinners. Nice French restaurant with cozy atmosphere overlooking Damrak and canal. Very central location. Nice choice of French dishes. Not stuffy, staff attentive when needed. Price quality for Amsterdam is excellent. I've had many mediocre meals for this price point.

Fine dining in the Red Light District is possible here. We went here for a 7 course dinner. The food was great, the service from a high level and the wines they served with the menu were very good. It's a lovely building next to the water and if you are lucky, you get a table watching it. Why I... More

The W Hotel (fabulous!) recommended this restaurant for our last night in Amsterdam. We requested a small, romantic restaurant with great food. This was perfect! The food and service was excellent. We highly recommend it!

We went there for a 7 course dinner and it was absolutely delicious! The service was at the perfect pace and the waitresses was attentive enough. They have an extended wine menu, and we got some good advice for the wine. If youa re looking for a fine dining night, this place is definitely recommended!

Arriving by train? De Compagnon restaurant in the very heart of Amsterdam’s old city is five strolling minutes from Centraal Station – and it’s worth finding. Down a side alley, De Compagnon seats just 35 diners over three floors with windows and doors that open onto the water of Damrak. Small it may be, but the effect is light and airy, comfortable and cosy. Bert van Buschbach is in the kitchen, creating traditionally-styled French/Burgundian cuisine while Sara van Buschbach’s domain is the front of house and the superb and celebrated French wine list. Meeting facilities are terrific: a private room seating up to 12 and a wine cellar that can accommodate parties up to 20. Private dining here means your own waiter and chef too. Dishes include starter of salad of sautéed scallops crumbed in dried ceps, main course of whole fried guinea fowl with creamy truffle sauce and sliced fresh truffled (for two) and red fruit with curds and red fruit sorbet for dessert. Of the 300 wines, about 200 are listed at under euros 50, with a very nice selection of half bottles.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
