We ate at Ai Barbacani last night and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Firstly, ask for the outside table (weather permitting!), they have just one which is on what I can only describe as it's own private ledge where passers by will stop to take your photo and wave to you - very romantic. The service was great and the food... More

Good food for nice price. We had a 3 course meal which was wonderful except for the dessert which wasn't up to pair with the rest. The free proscecco for starter and grappa as ending is a nice touch.

During a three day trip to Venice we had to eat here twice. Simply some of the nicest food I have eaten. The service is superb. You will be seriously missing out if you do not visit Ai Barbacani. Booking recommended.

All menu parts were excellent. Starting with an excelent octopus salad, following a gnochi wit scampi and for the final a semifredo all caffe afogado. Of course with an excellent chanti wine.

Great atmosphere, good food. Very attentive and polite personnel. Welcoming drink and a limocello to follow the meal-on the house. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening and would recommend it to everyone. The lemon mousse was to die for.

Fad read about this place and we had gotten lost so we were a tad late in arriving bt ehy had kept our reservation. The feeling was warm and they were in the business of providing a good atmosphere for a good meal. We were not disappointed

We found this restaurant on TripAdvisor, as it was a short stroll from our hotel the Ruzzini Palace. We were greeted with a glass of Prosecco followed by a meal of lovely, great value food and rounded off with a complimentary glass of Grappa or Limoncello. Wonderful service in an informal atmosphere with great food - what could be better.... More

We ate there on our first night in Venice, and happened to search restaurants on yelp that had good reviews. They were amazing, took us right in without reservation, and greeted us with champagne. There were not many options for small children, or picky eaters, which my kids are, but they managed to eat pasta and gnochi. Everyone devoured their... More

The food and atmosphere made for a special evening. We sat at the table on the edge of the water. It doesn't get any more romantic.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
