Nice and healthy food (primarily vegan) even though overpriced. If you want to sit you have to pay at weight, which comes out to be a bit tricky in the final price, although you can opt for a cheaper box to take away. The really bad thing is the staff, not only because they are really slow, but because they... More

The food is primarily vegan. You can select from several recently prepared dishes behind a counter and it will be heated (microwave). Although the food is not made to order, it is still relatively fresh as there are constantly dishes (new?) being prepared and brought out. Generally vegetables with a middle eastern seasonings. Tasty, but for how basic it was,... More

As a vegetarian who usually eats Vegan in my hometown, I wasn't impressed at all by the food in this place. If you want to eat Vegan I think this is one of the few options in Venice, but I spent 10 euros on a very small meal I didn't really enjoy and that left me a strong garlic-onion aftertaste.... More

Very well prepared and good vegan food. Main drawback - even if compostable, disposable cuttlery is not very cosy.

This is a shop, not a restaurant, but you can eat right there. For our purposes, the only kosher eatery in Venice outside of the Ghetto. The proprietor was friend, the food tasty, but in our eyes very expensive and not worth the shlep, although the view from the nearby Vaporetto stop is amazing. As a fan of Guido Brunetti,... More

We were staying nearby and came upon this place by chance. It's actually more of a wholefood shop with a big table than a restaurant. You choose from an array of dishes in the refrigerated display cabinet. Dorina, the owner, told us that everything is made by a chef from fresh and top quality ingredients, and I have to say... It's not difficult at all to be vegan in Venice and you can walk everywhere and anywhere in no more than 20 minutes. This place was really yum and friendly. Good to see vegan places in Venice.

I researched restaurants in Venice as I knew it would be more difficult to get around by boat. Le Spighe is the only restaurant located just a short walk from the San Marco ferry and Square. It's a charming little restaurant that serves daily soup, specials(hot and cold), displayed in a front case for the customers choosing. Great flavours, and... More

This unique, lovingly run, cafeteria-style eatery is worth every euro. Every dish is jammed with a tasty variety of organic foods. Be patient: Doriana takes time to make sure every client is served attentively. From the platters on display you make your choices -- three or four or five different selections on your plate are just fine -- and Doriana... More

We had a terrible experience the day before last when dining at the Osteria Garanghelo only a few steps further down the same street (Via Garibaldi). Thanks god there are places in Venice where good healthy food is delivered at a reasonable price.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
