Away from the crowds, located at the edge of the peaceful park, but close enough to the vaporetto stop, the place is cosy, friendly, with attentive and pleasant staff and they offer good and tasty food. Reccomend it for all these mentioned, and as a plus, it's the perfect corner when you want to get away from the noisy streets... More

Lovely people, very helpful and the pizzas, if a little samey, were very good. We also had Olives a l'ascolana which I hadn't had for years. In summary, fair priced pizzeria, nothing fancy but well worth a visit especially if you are in the area (we were staying at the Hotel Sant Elena).

A regular stop for coffee or light lunch, for an evening drink, or a meal - the pizza and the baccala are legendary. And the fried olives as a starter - don't miss them! Staff are lovely, we love Vecia Gina's!

Always was closed at prime times. Suggest hours from 7am to 3pm. A good 8 hour day. To be fair, the area around it seems quite abandoned. ☹️

Venice is hell - so many people taking selfies of themselves and eating World food jammed next to each other. Sant' Elena is a lovely superb on the water's edge, walk-able to the centre but half way by Vaparetto between St. Marc's and the Lido. There are residents and this seems to be their "local". Two nights, two meals (2nd... More

Wanted to enjoy a traditional pizza in Venice and stopped by. Nice atmosphere up in there at S'Elena, friendly service and most of all - delicious traditional pizza!

Stopped here after walking from Rialto via San Marco. It is, by the way, a delightful walk. Near the end of the Arsenal Park, near the military school is a community with this sweet little cafe, Vecia Gina. It is spotlessly clean, well staffed with cheerful people who put up with our pathetic Italian. A plate of cold cuts with... More

La Vecia Gina is not a luxury restaurant, it is a bar and a pizzeria where you can have a coffee, an ombra (a glass of wine) or some pizza or traditional food. It is in the heart of the bigger park of Venice, close to entertainement for kids and to the vaporetto stop. A perfect place to your aperitivo... More

We've been coming here for years as we bring a small group of high school students every June. St. Elena is a precious area full of locals and kids out playing and grandmas and grandpas with the family dog. What could be better??? When we first started visiting this area years ago we were met with lots of stares from... More

As a returning customer and a Venetian myself, I took my family and friends for lunch to this place that I remember was ok. I called before hand to make sure they were serving the same food I was looking for, they say YES no problem at all. As we sat down and saw the food, it was definately out... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
