Forget the tourist places, hidden away in Venice are many Osteria's waiting to be found. This was a recommendation from our hotel, the food especially the fish was excellent, great atmosphere and service. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Definitely worth a visit, book however.

We certainly enjoyed our dinner in this charming, local restaurant in the quieter Cannaregio district. Service was charming and attentive and the fresh Italian food lovely. We enjoyed the carpaccio, veal liver (Fegato alla Veneziana) and desserts. It was quiet the night we visited but, as it's small, I would still recommend booking.

This restaurant was very close to our hotel in a really good location, on a quiet street but still really close to the main drag. There is no doubt the food is very good and it is a cut above your average trattoria experience but I couldn't help feeling that we paid a heck of a lot for not much... More

Osteria L'Orto dei Mori is a lovely little eatery in the Cannaregio district of Venice. We had a cracking meal there and received great service from the very friendly waiting staff. The menu choices were very extensive and spread over the traditional four courses. We felt three courses would be more than enough and our waitress was very supportive of... More

We had a great meal here. Restaurant is small but all the patrons seemed to be enjoying the food and having a good time. The service was kind and efficient. We ordered the veal liver and duck ragu pasta. Both meals tasted fantastic. Little on the expensive side but well worth finding for a great meal away from the majority... More

It's a nice place, but a little tight. Expect to get bumped every time the wait staff or a customer passes. Which is fine for a simple osteria, but this place has the prices of fine dining. I had a few appetizers just to keep a light lunch and they were good, typical ventian fare, but nothing extraordinary. The staff... More

We celebrated a birthday party and wanted a romantic evening with nice food. We found it here in optima forma. Nice and efficient service, nice people all around. And tasty food, simple but delicious. Good affordable wines may be chosen from a well filled list. In a romantic quiet neighborhood Cannareggio.

We got this recommendation from our very friendly and elegantly spoken host at Arcadia Boutique Hotel. Well prepared fresh local affair, slightly off the beaten path. We enjoyed the Mediterranean stew and the Amatriciana (bacon and tomato) pasta. Both carefully prepared, interesting and delicious. We finished the meal with a red wine pear with ricotta cheese ice cream. Highly recommended... More

Cozy yet amazing restaurant. Off the beaten path and visited by locals. Every dish we got there was amazing flavor explosion, good to the last bite. Highly recommend. You won't be disappointed!

For our final night in Venice we opted for a meal in a restaurant on the Cannareggio near to our hotel and chose the Osteria L’Orto dei Mori, it appeared to offer a modern twist on Italian classics. The reception/meal started somewhat frostily when we were seated in a somewhat cramped table right by the door, the waitress then admonished... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
