Went on recommendation from our hotel., therefore had high expections.......... Initial impression good as restaurant looked busy, but once service started, slowly things went downhill. While deciding what to eat, asked for gin and tonics while looking at the menu. We asked the waiter if he could recommend local wine, but as we were unsure if to our taste, he... More

I thought this was a relatively good and quite friendly place. The owner offered to let us taste some of the items before we chose. The woman behind the bar was a little stone faced but she did crack the occasional smile. All in all it was quite good.

Another recommendation from locals and we were very pleased we tried this restaurant for dinner. We didn't have a booking but arrived soon after opening time at six fourty and were quickly shown to our table by very efficient wait staff. Excellent local seafood here and we all enjoyed our meals. Nice wine list at reasonable prices. Highly recommended dining.

Really enjoyed the food here the selection and service were both excellent. We all enjoyed having our first meal here during our stay in Venice. The wine was good and overall would have gone back but there were so many places to try. Please it was only 5 mins from our Hotel Cà dell’Arte.

Off the beaten path in a quiet part of San Marco (and around the corner of our hotel Locanda Fiorita), we found this nice restaurant that we liked enough to go back a second time around! We dined al fresco even though the tables were jammed tightly next to each other (so privacy wasn’t much of an amenity). However, the... More

Venice can be like Disneyland: the crowds, the iconic sights/sites, the touristy restaurants. Osteria Al Bacareto is different. It's only slightly off the beaten path, near Campo San Stefano and well worth the delightful walk there. Tiny corner restaurant specializing in seafood, outside tables, quiet spot. As a starter, I had stuffed pumpkin blossoms, filled with shrimp & monkfish, then... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
