The Antica Friggitoria Carrega is a simple place located near the Aquarium of Genova, once a “poor harbor neighbor” but now a lively and charming place. Today we will call it street food...but it is a place where you can buy and take away exceptional...specialities: fried calamari, octopus, shrimps, anchovies, the local farinata and panizza but also delicious small pizzas. Important tip: they don’t have tables but if you want, the bar next door is of to use their tables if you take drinks with them!More

August 14, 2019 - While visiting Genova on our trip to Italy, we stopped at this seafood restaurant at the Genova waterfront. We saw it reviewed before we left home for Italy and it sounded like an interesting place to visit with good seafood. We...were not disappointed. We had the fried cod and it was delicious. We watched as the cooks prepared typical food found in Genova like the chickpea pizza. We ate our cod at the small counter while we watched customers come and go. The owner told us that the restaurant had been in the family for decades and was started by his grandfather. I recommend stopping for fresh seafood and an authentic harbor atomosphere.More

Tasty and fresh seafood. They start frying at 12, so don’t miss it - really worth it. Amazing, tender calamari, juicy prawns, can have along with some wine.

We stopped here for lunch! Under there Portico, with not even a name... Just look for the long queue and follow the amazing smell. It's mega busy, but the service is quick. We had fried totani, fried anchovies, boiled octopus (amazing), potatoes, salt fish alla...livornese. And bread. The fish wasn't greasy at all, the salt fish super tasty, and the octopus stupendous... Mmh, real olive oil!!! We spent 28 euros for everything, and the 3 of us had plenty to eat. I could eat there every day, I loved it. Thank youMore

It was a pleasure to have their always warm fried fish in hand to walk around the harbor. The food is of great value and quality. It was the best place to have a taste of the seaside Genoa

We stopped by Antica Friggitoria Carega to taste some local baccala during our stopover in Genoa. They offered a variety of fried tastes. We started off with a delicious dough filled with spinach, moved on to different kinds of deep fried seafood and ended with...a delicious bite of a chick pea "French fry." They offered portions as small or as large as we liked which allowed us to take some risks in our ordering that we may not have otherwise. This was definitely a great introduction to the food of Genoa.More

This place is one of the best fried-sea-food you will find in Italy. You can try fish foods, both fried or none, but anyway traditional specials from genoa. The one thing you really MUST try and worth the whole trip is the fried baccalà, really...fantastic. The place is more fastfood-like. You can get your food at low prices and go somewhere nice to eat it. It offers also a little place to eat, but only 2-3 chairs and not so confortable, therefore i'd suggest to take it and go to eat on the sea at the near storic dock.More

Our first food experience in Genova. Not really positive. Our friend lives as expat in Genova and brought us with him. The place is small but looks nice, because of the authentic elements. Big plates of fried fish are stalled behind glass. We ordered a...plate of mixed fish and chips + 3 glasses of wine. My boyfriend walked to one of the chairs (he walked with a crutch because of a bruised foot) The staff began to yell at him with an angry face, because he wanted to clean. In this unkind atmosphere we waited for our food. The fish and chips was 'warmed up' in a microwave: served half cold with a chewy texture. We paid in total 20 euros. Only plus was the wine. Wouldn't recommend or visit again.More

This is the kind of place you want to love. Hole in the wall with platefuls of lovely looking food. I order a plate of little fried fish. She took a mound of the previously fried fish and whacked them in the microwave with the...predictable effect that they were warm greasy and soggy. It makes life really efficient for them - cook a big batch and then reheat as needed. It just happens to destroy the very thing that would make it worth eating here.More

This is probably the most famous friggitoria in Genoa, as on the Wikipedia site there is also a photo of the Italian singer/song-write Fabrizio de Andre pictured here. As predicted it was really full of people and you might have to wait to get a...seat on one of the few stools available here (4 or 5 stools are there, no more). The atmosphere is cozy and familiar, with many customers greeted with their first name by the owner. We had the fried calamari, which were delicious and fresh, although a bit expensive (6 Euros for a 150 gram portion is not cheap for Italy). We also had a fried cod (also delicious, although not served hot but just lukewarm). Then we tried the fried anchovies which were also excellent. Finally we had a local speciality, a kind of quiche with vegetables, good but nothing special. Overall, you should go there, if not anything else for the lively and friendly atmosphere and the fresh fish, but make sure you ask whether the fish is hot or only lukewarm, as fried food should ideally be eaten piping hot.More
