Okay, THIS was the famous Francescana? Quite a disappointment!
After all you‘ve heard, you‘re giddy with expectation, and, frankly, you shouldn‘t…
So why exactly?
You‘re being held waiting in the smoldering heat outside the closed door til at 8 PM sharp they graciously decide to...let you partake from the AC inside. As for a welcome-greeting, 3(!) different minions check if your police records, pardon, your reservation papers prove valid. Then, another minion (nobody introduces themselves) guides you to your table in a somewhat bleak room. After all your initial inconvenience, aperitivo is NOT on the house, and stiffly so.
But you‘re here for the famed Chef and his culinary creativity, right?
Well, here comes the 12 course tasting menu (290 €, plus 190 € accompanying wines, plus plus…), and it’s not innovative and creative, but a copy-cooking of ideas of befriended chefs, called „With a little help from my friends“. Right.
Does Bottura still cook and be creative himself? The very thing you travelled here for? Nope.
It‘s all, well - sorry you nameless helpers: minions.
The Master turns up for about 15 minutes, passing from table to table, bragging about how many reservations he has in his waiting list, about having cooked for the UN - you know the spiel…
Baseline: a well oiled PR machine (with a little help of his wife…), that somewhere on its lucrative way lost its soul.
To avoid a disappointment like ours - don’t go there, or you‘re destined to find out for yourself.More
