This is where the locals eat and the food is fantastic. We happened upon this family owned restaurant while out walking in Rome. The proprietor, Romeo, is a very interesting person with a love and knowledge of food. His wife is the chef and a well known former scientist. The restaurant was packed but he made room for us and... Unassuming from the street, inside the food is wonderful, the atmosphere cozy and the service warm and attentive. The owner, who made friendly visits throughout the meal, is pursuing a slow-food approach. The menu includes traditional Roman cuisine, with some Jewish influence. The restaurant is in a former synagogue, which dates to 980 CE according to the owner. We had... More

This is by far our favourite restaurant from our trip. The place is owned and run by a local Roman family, and the host and son are both hilarious and know so much about the local history. The chef is also equally as delightful as she brings a lot of traditional recipes into her cooking. The creme brulee is second... More

The restaurant and the food is full of history, lovingly described by Romeo and his son. They were so welcoming, and the food was delicious. The artichoke pie, old recipe pork shoulder and creme brulee were the highlights. Lovely wine, and the wine cellar is interesting too. Some strong competition but this was definitely our best meal this holiday.

We had visited this restaurant as part of a food tour the day before so was looking forward to dining there properly the following evening. When we arrived at the restaurant for our pre-booked table at 7:30pm they hadn't even opened, the doors were locked and the restaurant was empty, so not the best start. The menu was very limited... A fantastic meal at this place. It had been recommended to us by a local and we were not let down. One of the best meals I have had in the past few years. We will definitely return and would highly recommend it. Cosy atmosphere and excellent service and attention from the very likeable family owners. 10/10.

This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend who promised good food and an even better story. Frankly, she knew I couldn't resist a restaurant located in an ancient synagogue and a tour of a wine cellar. She was right. We understood what we should expect and that is exactly what we got: a good story, well executed food and... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
