This restaurant is really strange. In the menu, there are really typical old fashion Roman dishes, we loved the idea that you can still eat "tongue" in a restaurant as 50 years ago. If you are new on these dishes we suggest to be open mind when you try them! We had pasta "cascio e pepe" and it was perfect... More

We wandered into this restaurant located in Testaccio... not typical for us since we like to read reviews ahead. We ate lunch in the lovely patio, little traffic on the nearby street, and a beautiful setting with vegetation. Our four entrees were excellent and the wine excellent. We enjoyed seeing and hearing about the red wine process for uncorking, etc.... More

Great service and friendly management. Excellent wines and wide selection of favorite roman dishes and some surprises you dont find at home. Very reasonable pricing. Cool area if you keep an open mind.

Spent a 45-min walk from the Colosseo, to this over 130-year old resto. Nice decorations & walls of awarded certificates, but poor service, and food only so-so, have no reason or impulse for a 2nd visit & highly NOT recommended!! We ordered cold cut (nothing special) Spaghetti with tomatoes & basil (spaghetti quality is worse than any other resto we've... More

A legendary Roman Restaurant located nearby Monte Testaccio, serving Roman traditional cuisine. A long menue and wine list served in a nice Ambiente. Here you can find authentic bucatini, Spaghetti carbonara, saltimbocca, using ingredients and making them lighter on the plate, also vegetarian is available. The Service somewhat "reserved" prices rather upper class. Outdoor small garden.

Do not expect fancy modern restaurant - this is all about tradition and history. Perfect service, great traditional roma cuisine - do not forget to try pajala, coda and trippa.

Good but dated food and presentation .The restaurant is crowded and service is average for Rome.Try another restaurant if your idea of a good meal has moved into the 21ST century.

I'm from Rome and I live in the US. My wife and I recently visited Rome and had dinner at the Checchino Dal 1887 restaurant. The food was precooked, the wine was OK, but overpriced. For the wine, water, two pasta entrees and a second coursewit a side dish, we paid 117 euros before the tip. This is not a... More

I should say that Checchino maintains the highest standard in the Roman cuisine tradition. La coda alla Vaccinara (cow tail) has been simply amazing, really cooked at the perfection. Extremely tasteful. The pasta alla Carbonara (as well as Amatriciana and Gricia) are always a great example of how the pasta should be cooked in the "Roman way". Lastly, the "puntarelle... More

If you are searching for fancy stuff like air of lime, soy sprouts or de-structured dishes, this is not the place for you; but if you are searching for some traditional regional food, with intense tastes, you will not be disappointed. The restaurant is elegant, but not formal and it has a cosy feeling. It is small, so I guess... More

Staying in Testaccio

Neighbourhood Profile
Put the house music on replay and you have Testaccio, an ancient Roman port and former working class neighbourhood where the bass is set to high almost every night of the week. Its collection of discoteche (nightclubs), street parties, and crowded restaurants give it its well-deserved party reputation. During the daytime, Testaccio is more easy listening than club hit, the area is full of locally owned small businesses and has one of the city's larger produce markets.
