The scallop appetizer, the caponata, the cacio e pepe, the fried artichokes, the white fish (sorry, I can't remember all the names of fish in Italian...), everything was executed to perfection. Maybe I hit them on a very good day, or maybe they are just overall amazing. In all cases, I will definitely be back. Service staff the typical friendly,... More

We enjoyed an excellent sea food lunch yesterday at this nice small restaurant based on a recommendation from a friend who lives in Rome. We loved the fried artichoke, boiled octopus with lime and seared monk fish. The wine recommendations were great and the service was excellent contrary to the many comments in this forum. I would highly recommend this... More

We were nicely welcomed, bur then more or less forgotten. But no problem, there were may guests coming in at the same time. A bit annoying to be the first to come and last to order of those who arrived within the same 10 minutes, and of course the only ones who did not get any attention or bread. Having... More

Charming old seafood restaurant in Trastevere, the wait staff was nice and the place felt 200 years old. The food was good, but I have to say not great. No regrets eating there, but it just wasn't anything special.

La Gensola is in the hot spot neighborhood for foodies in Rome. It is across the River and in a small Piazza of the same name. So quaint and lovely inside. We had terrific service and the food was fantastic. Trastevere is not on the main path in Rome so you have to take a short cab ride but it... More

I can safely say this was one of my worst culinary experiences along with poor service. The waitress asked if I wanted any water so I ordered a bottle. No mention of wine or aperitif. Menu unceremoniously delivered. No wine list. I was surprised to see scallops and swordfish on the menu so I checked they were fresh. Surely they... More

Though this place was highly recommended by an Italian colleague, we do not intend to ever visit again. We are sure it is not agreeable to see people entering your restaurant during a downpour, but basic professionalism will withhold you from showing so. Service, or lack of it, continued in the same vein: long wait for menu, long wait for... More

I found this restaurant in Trastevere from the Elizabeth Minchilli ap (a must have). Osteria La Gensola is one of her favorite restaurants in Trastevere. OK, our taxi driver got completely lost and we had to help him navigate. Once you find the restaurant, it's worth the complications. La Gensola specializes in seafood. The restaurant is simply decorated but very... More

We had a correct tunna tartar to start, and then I had excellent spaguettis with shells and my partner had rigattoni carbonara, excellent too! Normal prices, nice location.

The same owner, Claudio, has another restaurant near via Veneto which I prefer (it even has a separate smoking room). His lovely daughter works here. The food is seafood, high quality, very nice. Overall a good bet in Rome

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
