Every trip to Rome for over 40 years (since my student days) includes a dinner at Mario's. It's a family restaurant serving simple but real Italian home cooking. Nothing fancy. However an increasingly rarity in the center of Rome.

In the city center, usually, is difficult find something good with best quality, touristic dishes and pasta not so much good, not bad, fried really oily and everything lack of taste... wouldn't like back to eat again in that place.

The sea food primi was cold , indifferend and tasteless. The green pepper sauce was also tasteless and like reheated in the... More

I go often to Rome and I never lose occasion to go to this restaurant where you can breathe a really roman characteristic environment. Fresh food at good price (maybe the best price in the zone). Recommend indeed!

I have been frequenting Mario's for seven years, and never left disappointed. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service friendly and the food excellent. Greatly recommended!

Authentic Italian restaurant serving delicious food. Probably best pasta of the trip! Reasonably priced and one watches Marie preparing the dishes in the kitchen.

We came across this restaurant quite by chance after doing a 1 1/2 hour walking tour which ended near Castel Sant'Angelo. Decided to walk further 5 bridges across Tiber River into Travestere. We were tired and famished. Two restaurants our walking guide recommended were not going to be open for another 1/2 hour, so we continued walking along with wonderful... More

In-between all the touristic places, this wonderful restaurant hides. The sign for me was, that if the locals are eating there, then it must be a good place. And it was! Super tasty! It is very tempting to go back there again.

This restaurant in a busy touristy area has such good food without unnecessary frills. The tastes are wonderfully authentic.

Had a very good lunch here with some splendid carbonara together with several small dishes (flowers di zucco, artichokes etc). The only letdown was the gnocchi which came in a uninspired tomato sauce. We ended off with a very very good tiramisu. Our waiter was very attentive and positive and left us with an impression of a warm and welcoming... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
