On a pilgrimage with 21 of us and they were very gracious in accommodating my gluten free diet. We had the choice of a set menu and everyone enjoyed the meal. The optional guest togas were a riot and added to our Pompei experience. Good food, good wine and attentive service. Would highly recommend!

I went to this place for dinner on a Saturday night with a group. The restaurant presents itself very well, with typical Roman-era settings, recreating the settings of the nearby excavations. The funniest thing is that upon arrival the staff makes guests wear Roman tunics, so the whole atmosphere recalls that period.
It is possible to choose the classic menu (therefore with typical dishes of the time) or a more modern menu, both fish-based and meat-based. Personally I had the opportunity to taste the meatballs, potatoes, ravioli, lamb shank and guinea fowl; for dessert, ricotta with honey. The food was really very good, every course satisfied me in terms of flavors and taste. Slightly larger portions would have been even more appreciated. The staff is kind and quite present, also spending time on pleasant historical explanations on some elements of the furniture.
Ultimately it is an excellent restaurant and allows for a very interesting "gastro-cultural" experience; the bill was a little above the average for the place, but all in all it is understandable given the experience offered.
Recommended and not just for tourists.

An ancient Roman restaurant that had caught my attention from a Japanese TV show. The venue is set in Pohnpei Marina district, a few steps from Pompeii Gate. This time, two people shared one course of €45 and a la carte salad and pasta (€81 including water and seating fees). The course is true to ancient Roman cuisine, while the à la carte is a mixture of modern cuisine.
The food, with herbs and honey, was easy to eat overall, and I enjoyed it to the end! The course is large and à la carte is hearty, so for lunch, one course for two ➕ one a la carte might be just right.
The food on the terrace on a sunny day felt really good, and the staff were very pleasant, giving us a good experience!

It's not my habit to write reviews, but here it was impossible, I'm sorry because I know what it means to receive a negative review, but anyway I give the food a passing grade, nothing special, I've attached photos to make you understand, beautiful location, very exaggerated prices, 4 dishes, a loose wine in a carafe 18 euros for a water then covered for a total of 94 euros, we are really out of line considering the quality you served. I could go on but I'd rather not! I was too disappointed!!! At this price you eat CN fish of the right quality! For what I ate with you the right price is 60 euros, you can't charge me for a loose wine in a carafe 18 euros and a fried artichoke parmigiana 14 euros. I won't go back. I add car wash at the end of dinner so 10 euros plus 94 we are at 104 euros, there is better at this price

Gentile Gianfranco, innanzitutto la ringraziamo di essere stato nel nostro ristorante. Siamo consapevoli della qualità eccellente del cibo che offriamo e dei prezzi quindi adatti e non assolutamente esagerati; il vino che lei chiama "sfuso" è Falerno del Massico in anfora.
A questo prezzo potrebbe mangiare sì pesce, ma congelato.

We were in Pompeii visiting the ruins, after a long day we were looking for a nice outdoor seated restaurant for some dinner. We wandered a little, but most of the daytime restaurants appeared to have closed down for the day, and so we wandered a little more and eventually found a restaurant with outdoor seating, because the weather was just too warm and sunny to be indoors.
We read in so many reviews that this was such an 'authentic' Italian restaurant, and the score on this platform suggested quite an experience, so our expectations were high.
After a walk down a long walkway besides a motorway overpass, we arrived in the small restaurant courtyard and were greeted by friendly staff.
The menu was interesting, not extensive or overly exciting, but we chose and placed our order. Water was brought to the table for my pregnant partner, but charged at 3 euros per bottle which was excessive.
The food arrived, it was pretty average in all honesty and far from the 'authentic' taste of Rome that we were promised, but we were satisfied.
Overall, I cannot comprehend the score that this restaurant has. There are very few good restaurants in this city, this one is very average and so I struggle to understand how it has the store that it has, unless the locals have very low expectations in terms of dining.

I visited the Caupona restaurant where I invited my wife as one of the highlights of our stay in Italy. We had the ancient Roman menu. First the positives:
You have a great concept, bringing the ancient Roman menu to life is fantastic. In that respect, it really is an unforgettable experience. Equally true, the staff was accommodating. The dishes were good, the chef even sent us to taste the Garum sauce, which is a legend in Roman cuisine. As a fan of antiquity, my fingers are crossed for you and I send you full points for maintaining these traditions and your courage to implement this concept.
However, there were some things that disappointed me a bit and it's a shame that they spoil an otherwise great idea so unnecessarily. First of all, your staff does not speak English well. I had to ask for a menu three times and never once got one. So I went and got it myself. Your staff didn't tell me anything about the ancient Roman food they served. As a fan of antiquity, I looked everything up and explained it to my wife. When I called your waiter, he just read me everything in English with bad pronunciation. The menu itself looks a bit undignified, almost tabloid, like a tourist trap. At the same time, it would take very little for the waiters to learn about the dishes, explain where you got these recipes from and you would be great. It's a shame that such absurd mistakes spoil an otherwise absolutely fantastic concept and an otherwise very nice approach. If you need me to write something about your dishes, as a historian I'll be happy to help.
So in conclusion: I will definitely recommend it to everyone. It's an expedition into the depths of history and an experience. Just modify a few little things, educate the staff a bit and you are on your way to becoming a legend.

Definitely a characteristic restaurant where you are taken back to the Pompeian era but appearance alone is not enough.
Historical and à la carte menu for the traditional.
We opt for 2 historic meals at €40 each without cover, drinks and coffee.
We ask the owner for advice on wine and he suggests a white, praising it as divine: we trust it.
The pre-appetizer did not arrive, and in response I was told that the lampascioni were in the appetizer (2 transparent slices of sweet and sour onion), oh well.
Good food but the surprise is when the bill arrives: €60 a bottle!
To be precise, the wine is a VILLA MATILDE
Falerno del Massico Bianco DOP - Vigna Caracci - Villa Matilde from 2018, good but certainly with a disproportionate price increase and then you don't offer a €60 wine without saying what it costs, that's not correct.
Also because the wine list wasn't even offered to us.
Never again.

Per quanto riguarda il vino, le è stato proposto un vino che si abbina ovviamente a ciò che avete mangiato. Se il prezzo non viene chiesto dal cliente non siamo obbligati a dirlo, bastava richiedere la carta dei vini e le sarebbe stata prontamente portata.

We arrived by chance (we had arrived late in Pompeii and didn't know where to eat) and we were left speechless.
Truly suggestive location: staff, furnishings and above all the menu are designed to give the impression of eating in a real ancient Roman tavern.
Truly friendly and attentive staff, impeccable service and menu with very refined and original dishes but above all of truly excellent quality, we ate really well.
Nice note: to get more into the atmosphere, there is the possibility of dressing in typical ancient Roman clothes and togas.

Imagine! After a visit to the excavations of Pompeii, after having spent hours immersed in the streets of the city, visiting villas, entering the shops, imagining what life was like 2000 years ago, you would like to extend your "experience" by living at least for the time of dinner, just like the ancient Romans, even dress like the ancient Romans, then you have to go to Caupona, and already at the entrance you will feel catapulted into a real and tangible world of 2000 years ago, with my partner we chose to live this beautiful experience, at the entrance Augusto welcomed us, who does the honors of the host telling us the history of the place, the frescoes on the walls, and the environment in which we find ourselves, we go from a garden with a vaca to the center and you arrive in a room decorated like a Roman house, no detail has been left out, from the chairs to the jugs to the candle holders, even the menus.
And finally we sat down, there is a tasting menu that the chef assembled according to the foods present at the time, we opted for an appetizer, first course and dessert. Each course is an explosion of flavors and combinations of genuine ingredients, the quality of the plating as well as being pleasing to the eye is fantastic on the palate, the atmosphere is perfect and luck would have it that the place was all for us, the hint background music does not ruin the experience, on the contrary it encourages dialogue between one course and another. We didn't wear tunics for fear of dirtying them but the temptation was strong.
The menu is varied between flavors of land and sea and also the well-stocked cellar. We leave there and continue to talk about the details that we discover when we look around and how good the chef was, a one-of-a-kind experience that absolutely cannot be missed for anyone visiting Pompeii.

A few steps from the archaeological area of Pompeii is Caupona, which in Latin means Osteria, a place that faithfully evokes the environments of a classic Pompeian domus.
The idea is to propose an all-round immersion in the classic habits and customs of ancient Pompeii, starting from the furnishings, the wall paintings and the various objects that decorate the structure both outside and inside such as braziers, combat weapons and pottery (you can also note the reproduction of a plaster cast, a technique adopted to recover the shape and position in which the ancient Pompeii made up for the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD).
Nothing has been left to chance, starting from the welcome where you are dressed in the classic Roman toga. A waiter then carefully explains the place you are in, also explaining the history of the place. Once seated at your table you have the possibility, if you wish, to also taste a menu with the typical dishes that were served in ancient Rome. Each ingredient is carefully selected as well as attention to detail is not overlooked.
Furthermore, themed evenings and shows are often organised. The last one I had the honor of participating in was a reproduction of the Bacchae which featured Dionysius, King Pentheus and the Bacchae. Very impressive and very entertaining during dinner.
I recommend anyone who has never been there to go. I can't wait to go back!

We went here with family because we had heard they prepare food like the ancient romans did. Expected some recipies from “De Re Coquinaria”. There where none as far as i could find and the ancient romans sure did’t use something aimilar to asian siracha sauce that was put around my steak. Anyways that is not the worst of it, because the food was okay ,not the best ,but okay. However the price of everything was 3-4x more than in restaurants around Napoli and the dishes where ridicilously small in size. We ordered tuna cuts for ~25 euros and recieved 5 small slices. The staff was very nice however they where begging for tips at the end. In europe and in this case Italy there is no manditory tip culture and i consider it rude that they specially ask for it at the end. What i can say that this deffinetly is a TOURIST TRAP with OVERPRICED and mediocre food. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice.

Salve, grazie per essere stati nella nostra Caupona. Il menù che vi propone il nostro personale di sala contiene sia le ricette dell'antica roma sia il menù contemporaneo. Voi avete scelto la pietanza del menù contemporaneo. Inoltre notiamo un errore nel prezzo scritto da lei in quanto non era 25 euro ma 15 euro, come da scontrino. Di certo, come si nota anche dalle altre recensioni, non siamo mai stati considerati una trappola per turisti, anzi. Wonderful peaceful restaurant to offer a break from the tourist hustle and bustle of Pompeii. It's a little hard to find - down a long driveway - but worth the extra trek from the typical food stands right outside the park. Nice quiet little courtyard, and the interior seating was nicely decorated as well.
The ancient Roman theme is well done and pretty fun, if not a little bit hokey. Most waiters were dressed in togas, and there was a communal dining table where solo travellers chatted.
Food was excellent! Spaghetti with tri-color Vesuvius tomatoes was bursting with flavor and the pasta was al dente. Crusty cuttlefish with zucchini stuffing and squid ink was artfully presented and tasty too. I wish I had more room, as the tasting menu looked delightful. A tad expensive but felt like a good value for the quality and location.
Highly recommended as a quiet getaway from Pompeii after you've worked up an appetite!

I have never been treated in such a rude, disrespectful, demeaning manner in any of the countless restaurants I have visited. After booking via email on August 21st, I had to ask for a date change, which was confirmed via email more than a week before the requested date. I go to this restaurant even bringing my Roman dress, and upon arrival the two people at the reception first tell me that there are no reservations then, having seen the email which I promptly show, they see that the reservation is still for the following evening . They tell me in a rather annoyed tone (the place is full so...) that I have to wait. In the meantime I ask where I can go to change and always in that annoyed tone they tell me to use the bathroom. Okay. I go, I change, I go out and one of the two "kind hosts" signals me to sit outside, alone, under some plants (it had recently rained so imagine the drops of water, in fact no one was eating there) in the cool pungent in the evening. My obvious and kind refusal (I was already decidedly upset; but I used all my self control) refusal tells me that I have to wait a while longer. I stand near the entrance waiting and after about a minute the other "host" approaches and tells me that I have to sit down since it's not nice to be standing there in front of the other customers. At this point, having lost all patience, I take my bag and saying that it is not nice to treat a customer who has booked for some time in such an absurd way, I leave. Simply absurd, crazy. Incredible. Catering is trying to make the customer feel at ease, not treating them with arrogance and arrogance.

We had one of our best meals in Italy at Caupona. After starting with cocktails that were liberally poured, we moved to the appetizers of cheese on a small toast with honey on top. Truly excellent. For dinner I chose the chicken breast that was roasted with a bread crumb and spice combination that was both unique and exceptionally pleasing. For dessert we finished off with the chocolate mousse making for a near perfect meal.

We decided to celebrate Mother's Day at Caupona as the best place to all be together and feel at home. As always, excellent food, kind and welcoming staff always attentive to the customer's needs and thanks to the magic of the clothes that take you back in time you can relive ancient Pompeii.. Thank you so much ❤️
