Called in here on our last day to sample a calamari sandwich. Quaint, traditional bar with great service. The calamari sandwich was huge and very tasty washed down with a chilled glass of Mahou.

When we entered we saw that a lot of people were before us because they threw away their paper napkins on the floor. Perhaps a Spanish habit? After a while somebody from the staff toke the initiative to clean up the mess (see pictures). We went for the bocadillo de calamares, the patatas bravas and the local beer Mahou. The... More

saw many places selling this local favourite, but this one was very busy with lots of locals lined up to get the very cheap sandwich along with a plate of olives and draft beers. For 2 people it was €9 for all of the above. Add some bravas sauce or aioli if you want to liven up the sandwich a... More

There are numerous restaurants at Plaza Mayor selling calamari sandwiches, but in our opinion, this one is the best. Specializing in the sandwiches, they had a constant stream of customers flowing in and out of the store. Service was quick and with a smile, the sandwiches were tasty and most of all, it was great value. Highly recommended, and if... More

If you don´t mind about some extra calories and the heavy stuff is ok for you - Go and get your Bocadillo de Calamares (Sandwich with deep-fried Squid rings) at "La Ideal" Street food at it most traditional way! I´m a salty-one - so I have it for breakfast....

Calamari is good but totally overrated and Lots of other selling the same with longer lines. Eating calamari by itself would have been better as with the bread, it was a very dry sandwich!

Passed by this place while lost in plaza mayor and realized it was packed with locals and we had to try it! Walked in and were helped immediately by a friendly staff. Got a racione de calamare (came with bread and lemon), olives and two cañas for a little under 10 euros. Friendly local atmosphere. Grab a table or stand... More

We ate here on advice from our tour guide. (Ogo Tours Free walking Tour also very high recommended) The calamares were fresh and delicious, probably the best thing we ate on our trip in Spain. We tried several times to order these again on our travels in other restaurants, but no comparison. The restaurant is very small and full of... More

I ate a sandwich with calamares, it was too simple and a bit expensive!!! Also, the environment inside the place is not very friendly!!!

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
