Setting was cool, somewhat worn, but that added to the charm Staff slightly non plussed, but hey, this is Europe ;-) Service attentive, bar food fresh and tasty. Estafada fantastic Polpo - perhaps a little heavy on the paprika.. but great nonetheless

We arrived about 10.30pm, showed straight to a table. The service was quick & efficient, the restaurant was busy but our food showed up in good time. Really friendly cafe. The food was also very nice.

This used to be a thriving place. But it has deteriorated. I visited it every day over the past three days hoping it would get better. Every time, ti visited the place was almost deserted (last year, every table would've been taken; you were lucky if you timed it just as people were leaving and get their table). I had... More

Somewhat dilapidated but in a sort of chic and cool sort of way and very chaotic - needed a couple more waiting staff - but decent coffee (not great but good) and decent eclectic vibe. Worth a stop. Just.

Lavapies is a vibrant, multi cultural part of Madrid it's lively at all hours of the night and day. Cafe Barbieri is a calm respite in the midst of all the action outside. The decor reminded me of a French cafe and the service was prompt. Lots of folk like me, sat with their suitcases and the waiter seemed to... More

Went for brunch at 11:30 on a Sunday and sat with books having coffee and breakfasty things for the better part of an hour. Friendly, casual, cozy. Not especially fast, but then, neither were we.

Love the cool decor, great ambience and a delicious tortilla with freshly squeezed orange juice for €5. It was also a generous serving and efficient service. My kind of place. 👍👍

This is an Old cafe bar buitl in 1902 and set in the Lavapies district of Madrid, the building is impressive however the welcome is cold and very much favours locals over tourists. Poor service and a chilly welcome not a great visit

Stopped here for a coffee, and dived into one of their many sides - beans with poached egg. Really good flavour, decent portion size, and for a good price. Service was also speedy and friendly.

Cafe Barbieri is an echo of the (sadly now closed) Cafe Comercial. Old fashioned with a ramshackle charm, it is all mirrors and red velvet seats. Unfortunately I didn't get time to sample the menu, but the coffee was good, and we had friendly service. It's worth popping your head in for an espresso to see the nice decor if... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighbourhood.
