Where once famous Spanish writers met. The interiour matches its historical background and so does the waiter. But the cafe americano was bad and expensive

Visited here for lunch. setting quite pleasant but this is the only redeeming feature. The waiters were extremely surly and rude. We ordered patatas espanol and all we got was a plate of oily fries which incidentally cost €7.50 I would recommended that you give...More

I sat there on a rainy day and I ordered an expresso. It was below average and it cost me 3.90 euros which is extremely expensive for Madrid. Even though it is an historical place it doesn't worth what you pay.

A family of four with two teenagers, we had breakfast in this traditional and historical café. We were disappointed with what we ordered (croissants, coffee, churros and hot chocolate). The quality was no different than other places where we stopped. And we never had a...More

Rude service, watery cafe, dry croissants... A total letdown. Very poor value. The only upside is the interior decoration.

A grand old cafe and it doesn't disappoint of you are going for the history. That being said, the service was not especially friendly and my almond tart was slapped down so hard on the table, it launched off the plate. The waiter shrugged and...More

Cafes don't come more historic than Cafe Gijon. It has long been the haunt of writers, journalists, politicians and the good and not so good people of Madrid. You can feel its venerable history oozing out of the walls. The grumpy waiters are ironically part...More

Too expensive for our budget to dine here, it was still wonderful to visit and enjoy an aperitif with some nibbles/tapas. A place where great thinkers have met (and supposedly still do!) and relaxed- you can feel it in the air, see it in the...More

We had dinner in the private dining area downstairs which looked like a converted cellar, with fully timber clad walls and ceiling. It felt like we were in a boat. The ground floor is a traditional cafe style with lovely decor and the waiters wear...More

Had an evening meal at Café Gijon the other night and liked the buzzy atmosphere but the food was very average. The servings were large but there was an overuse of oil and butter which masked the taste.

Barrio de Salamanca
Broad, tree-lined avenues with pretty streetlights
frame the neighbourhood of Barrio Salamanca. With
beautiful condominium buildings that make up most
blocks in this area, this part of town is refined and
quiet. It is also host to a few of the city's large
shopping avenues, including Calle Serrano and Calle
Jose Ortega y Gasset. A walk down these streets will
reveal upscale chains, small boutiques, and plenty of
