6 of us had dinner here. It was empty apart two people so we got a table without a problem. Whilst choosing from the menu the waiter was standing at the end of the table impatiently. However this was the only bad experience. The food was great and the wine also. Recommend the octopus. One my friends had hake which... More

great atmosphere. full of local Spanish all enjoying the food which was excellent. Good selection of wine- the more expensive riojas went superbly with the various meats. the pork looked a bit fatty but the beef and rabbit we had were spot on. definitely wont be disappointed

This was a recommendation of our guide. Mr. Satt. He was absolutely right. The ‘racion’ of Iberian cured acorn ham was second to none. La Traviesa was an unexpected and pleasant surprise in the Plaza Mayor district, although it may not be an appropriate place for tourists who visit to Madrid to eat fried eggs and ignore  the real meaning of ‘Tapas’... Both a huge deception and disappointment! It might be possible that we did not choose the right dish. But this is also because we were looking for tapas and there were not any even though the words are written on the restaurant's front!!! Since we did not find any tapas, we ordered huevos rotos con jamón and tortilla: the eggs... More

We went here for dinner. We were looking for tapas. It was written in big letters outside the restaurant that they were doing tapas. Once we had ordered drinks we asked what tapas they were serving. The waiter told us that there are no tapas. So we ordered eggs with ham and tortilla espanola. But there was only two eggs... More

Order the steak, the ribeye-you won't believe how large it is and the meat quality if fantastic. I also recommend the tiger shrimp. Order a bottle of wine and enjoy the vibrant city around you.

We were wandering the streets getting hungry and walked past this restaurant. We walked on and checked out the other places in the area and went back to what seemed the most welcoming. The waiter gave us our choice of open outside tables. The inside was crowded, but with a happy crowd. We were seated across from the service window... More

Fantastic paellas and steaks with delicious jamon and starters. The service was very good and friendly. There is a lot of people during the rush hours so is better to book a table before or prepare to wait a little bit. Would definively go again next time that we will be in Madrid!

We tasted local flavors in this nice restaurant. Food was great, we ask for salted vegetables, fish, meat and house wine (surprisingly good). But the best thing was our waiter, this charming Spanish guy. A great choice when you are near Plaza Mayor in Madrid.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
