We had a very pleasant evening with friends. The place is traditional and decor is at best boring. Service very good and friendly. Food in general above average but not great. Steak on toast with anchovy butter ok, taste a bit greasy. Steak tartare very good. Starters were good ( fried calamari, anchovies). Tomato salad disappointing. Cheese somewhat disappointing as... We ate in a small comfortable room with perhaps five other tables. Staff were professional and pleasant. Menu was interesting and food preparation was excellent. We focussed on the Cantabrian specialties of the house and enjoyed them.

with high quality materials, this restaurant offers typical food from Santander in a reinterpretated manner. Food was excellent, a bit pricey, but you get good value for money if you try offers from places like tenedor.es. Staff was unbecoming to the quality of the food

If you would like a taste of Cantabria whilst in Madrid, I would certainly recommend Conlaya. We had a selection of starters including a very tender Pulpo dish (Octopus natural mango vinaigrette), a selection of Cantabrian cheeses and Croquetas – all of which were delicious. This was followed by a hake dish interweaved with seafood whilst another colleague enjoyed a... More

More

I lived in Spain years ago, and there were no comparable restaurants there then. Conlaya is the upscale, imaginative version of Spanish cuisine.

We found to this restaurant on recommendation of a friend of a friend. Located in one of the better quarters of Madrid, the front is discreet and there was no problem in getting a table. The menu presents Cantabrian cuisine with typically some interesting variation on well-known classics. While prices were somewhat upmarket, the food was very good indeed, going... More

Staying in Chamberi

Neighbourhood Profile
Chamberi
Multi-story residential buildings decorated with ornate balconies line the traditional, quiet, and pretty streets of Chamberí. Humble storefronts and neighbourhood taverns are scattered across the lower levels down every block, and here and there, there's a cluster of tables on the sidewalk. It isn't ever crowded, but people are always out, poking into the tiny bakeries, hardware stores, and tobacco shops, or ducking into a bright, unadorned cerveceria to have a coffee or beer by the bar, flip through the paper, and check the sports score. The round Plaza Olavide, where the fairly regular network of streets breaks form, is among the most green and lively spots. Restaurants line its circumference and sought-after outdoor tables fill the center of the plaza, where people relax to the sounds of kids playing and street musicians' tunes.
