My husband and I were walking by this bar one evening and we saw a crowd of about a dozen people outside, drinking some kind of concoction from large goblets. That was my introduction to the obsession that is the Spanish gin and tonic. We entered the bar and told the bartender that we were G&T novices. The bartender, Alex,... More

This is our local in Salamanca when we stay at the Wellington Hotel just round the corner on Velazquez. We have been coming here for many years and found it to be excellent for good-value light breakfasts (coffee and croissant or pincho de tortilla) and for tapas runs at lunchtime and in the evening. The mini burger, washed down by... More

Having excellent tapas in a well decorated restaurant, in the best area in Madrid, close to Retiro, with friends, and Pedro, your waiter from Sevilla that must be the nicest person on earth. Life is tough in Madrid!!

Coming from America and living in Spain, I've definitely noticed a difference in service. It's like Spaniards don't care that you're giving them money to keep their business afloat. But here, it was different. Attentive service, but not annoying. Good food, great price (12€ for 2 plates, bread, a drink, and dessert). And when our Spanish was lacking in certain... More

Stumbled onto this place as we were going to a wedding a church nearby. 7 of us were early and needed to kill some time. Walked around this lovely tree lined area and popped in here for coffee. Good service and good coffee.

Because you are foreigner they will charge you more. I asked shangria with cup they said they only sell with jug. But other people came and ask the same thing. Suddenly they have it.

Tucked in a quiet upscale neighborhood in Madrid's Barrio Salamanca, this place has the best mini burgers and selection of tapas that I have seen. The wines are varied and excellent, and the pricing is very reasonable. You instantly feel as if you are entering the home of a friend. And that is the best part - the service. They... More

I went with a couple friends to have a drink after dinner. We got a very well prepared (i.e with lime peeling and so) gin-tonic for 6€ (Tanqueray) which is not a bad price. Also they let you stand outside (standing), thing I tend to enjoy after a long day sitting at the office.

We were 9 friends visiting Madrid, and needed a place to eat. Unfortunately we chose this restaurant. A very friendly young frenchman took our orders. We were expecting good food and thought that the restaurant seemed a bit posh interior-wise. A lot of young people there. Maybe our age was the reason, why we didn't get our food? Maybe we... More

Staying in Barrio de Salamanca

Neighbourhood Profile
Barrio de Salamanca
Broad, tree-lined avenues with pretty streetlights frame the neighbourhood of Barrio Salamanca. With beautiful condominium buildings that make up most blocks in this area, this part of town is refined and quiet. It is also host to a few of the city's large shopping avenues, including Calle Serrano and Calle Jose Ortega y Gasset. A walk down these streets will reveal upscale chains, small boutiques, and plenty of opportunities for shopping or checking out the stylish displays. The locals here are polished and fashionable, the atmosphere is leisurely, and the lush Retiro Park on the southern border is yet another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. A stroll through Barrio Salamanca is all about admiring the beautiful architecture, window-shopping, and people-watching in this upper-crust corner of Madrid.
