Great food and wonderful experience eating traditional Catalan cuisine. Will definitely go back. Family run restaurant who clearly take pride in their cuisine. Menu is on the chalk board and feel free to ask what they suggest

Having an apartment in the area recently, we are looking for nice good restaurants which are not too expensive. My husband discovered Portoles in the evening by observing the people in line waiting for a table. Trip Advisor gave very good reviews. We have been here yesterday evening and we really enjoyed the food. We felt more like a local... More

It's really local and cheap. The food was nice and the all the staff were friendly, although only one of them speaks English (which means it's kind of local that I prefer). There was only one regret that some of the dishes were sold out very early so we couldn't try those we first wanted to try. What a shame!... More

This is Catalan cuisine. Very delicious ! I ordered the goat cheese salad to start then had beefsteak with potatoes the salad was very tasty if not bourgeois with fancy lettuce simply romaine tomatoes nuts ands seeds with a very nice dressing topped with Melba toast with roasted goat cheese. The beef was cooked perfectly to my taste as were... More

This authentic Catalan neighbourhood restaurant was just round the block from our hotel. We'd liked the look of it but every time we passed it was closed - it doesn't open till 9pm which is later than we prefer to eat. However on our last night in Barcelona we decided to see if it was open. We arrived at about... More

We went here for lunch and had three or four dishes to share. Having been living here for 6 months and had some extremely disappointing dining experiences this was a highlight and will now be a favourite in our new home town. I knew from the second we sat down and the kitchen smelled amazing, that we would get a... More

Dropped in on this place as we were hungry, about 20 meters from our hotel, and noticed that the place was noisy. Literally a hole in the wall, it was easy to walk past it, but so glad that we didn't. Nearly all locals, we found a small table at the back, and - not knowing Catalan - pointed at... More

This restaurant was close to where we were staying in Barcelona and was recommended to us by a local. There is no paper menu, all the dishes are written on a giant black board in the middle of the dining room. Everything we tried (we went there twice during our stay) was very good and very fresh. Often, you would... More

If you are looking for REAL Catalan food, this is the place. The menu is written on a chalkboard in Catalan, and you check it out and choose your dishes as you walk by on your way to your table. If you are new to Catalonia and do not know Catalan, bring a phrase book. Very few tourists, mostly locals.... More

This is one of the few examples in Barcelona (and Catalonia) of a typical Spanish bar where you can have a very good lunch/dinner consisting in "raciones" (portions), a bit more than a tapa and a bit less than a normal dish. Consequently, the best option is to ask for several dishes and share them. The quality of the food... More

Staying in Eixample

Neighbourhood Profile
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.
