Great service, beautiful and delicious food on a lunchtime menu. We chose this restaurant by chance on our way to a cognac tour at Martell.

We read the reviews about varied service but did not experience this....service was timely and efficient, food sumptuous, great wine list and the cognac list awesome. What’s not to like it was fabulous....road trips and dinners go hand in hand. Loved it.

There are too many good places to eat in Cognac to waste your time with this carelessly run establishment. The couple that arrived just before us left in a huff because the restaurant completely messed up their reservation. I wish we had followed them out....Our waiter seemed completely unconcerned that our simple main courses of magret de canard and pan-fried lotte still had not arrived after a 45 minute wait. When it did arrive, the food was cold, and quite apart from that, tasteless, The waiter offered neither an apology nor an explanation, but a mere shrug of the shoulder, as if to say ir's always this way here, what did you expect? I suspect he is right. Avoid.More

This time we went with our little kid but that was not a problem: the staff was very nice and having dinner there with a little girl - 4 year-old - is not a problem. Moreover, kids are served first. The dishes were close to...perfection: we had a potimaron soup with its fried foie gras and smoked salmon as starters. Then the duo de bigorre and brochettes of gambas : the gambas were perfectly cooked and the duo de bigorre as much appreciated, but maybe too salty. Even our kid's meal was good: she had duck suasage and French fries. We did not have any desert as we were already full. Also, there is a very large choice of wines, of any prices: from reasonable to very expensive. In conclusion: this is one of the best places to have dinner in Cognac.More

If you want to eat at Le Chai then you really do need to book to make sure you can get a table. The high-quality food is matched by their wines and you are not left with a hole in your wallet afterwards. Nicely located,...this place is good for people who want a really good French meal and is often used my local business people impressing their clients.More

We visited this restaurant whilst on a trip to Cognac. Service was excellent and the plat du jour both good value and excellent food. It was good to experience a bit of good french cooking and we finished our trip with a visit to the...Martell cognac house - probably the best meal I had in my two week stay in France.More

I came here for my annual visit when I stop on the way to the UK from Portugal (it's just over half way....) I am always happy with Le Chai. Given putative gastronomic standards in France, this place probably wouldn't even get a basic entry...in the Michelin guide. But this is a high quality place with a talented chef. You will rub shoulders with locals having a meal - or sitting at the bar for snacks and a drink - or tourists on the the cognac trail. The set menu is uninteresting but the a la carte has some excellent dishes - albeit at €16 a throw for starters and €25 to €30 for mains. I had a superb monkfish dish ('lotte' in French) with endive, celeriac, courgette, tomato and aubergine, fried in butter ( of course). Some really excellent ideas on the plate. And the wine list is superb - and not bad value too - it is particularly good for the Loire valley (e.g. Chinon, Sancerre) but it has £400 per bottle claret if you want that too. The maitre d' resides over everything and generates the banter with the locals and co-ordinates the wines while the young waitresses do all the work but the place is a great experience. I can highly recommend it - in the last 10 years, I have experienced a lot of complacency and laziness in French cuisine but this place bucks the trend.More

Friendly staff and good plat du jour menu. House wine was very good value. Issue which makes this less than top rating was that one of the starters, Concombre farci, used very bitter concombre, spoiling the starter and the Gazpacho was not very tasty. Service...was slow but not a big problem as we were not in a rush.More

Although not in a lovely area of Cognac this restaurant has a nice ambience inside, obviously themed around Cognac-making. We had a set three course meal which was nice and well priced at 22 euros each. The "a la carte" menu was varied and pretty...well priced as well. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful. The extensive wine list has bottles fro 18 euros up to 1000euros (yes 1000!). There are wines by the glass at a reasonable price too. A good experience.More

We had a very nice and quiet meal in a place downtown cognac. The formule du jour was quite complete, with a nice meat dish made out of pork from Spain. Service was very thoughtful and kind. Ask for Julien for a great service!

A restaurant that thinks it is a bit better than it probably is, but worth a visit and the best there is in the centre of town. The maitre d' holds court behind the bar, giving advice about the wine to the young waiter and...waitress and serving drinks to the locals who pop in and hang out at the bar for a glass or two. Nice interior with a large outside terrace. Good traditional French food with few concessions to modern foibles! Veal, fois gras, cote du boeuf, game, offal, terrines, pates, it's all here! Great wine list, with breadth and depth from all of France's major wine regions. And a stellar selection of Cognacs, of course! Food is good. I had terrine of fois gras followed by veal kidneys and a good selection of local cheese. Somewhat pricey - but all restaurants seem like that in France nowadays. Presentation of food is good and all food is very fresh and locally sourced. Worth a visit...More
