Well before our arrival for a four-night stay in Beaune, we relied on TripAdvisor’s recommendations, reviews, and online reservations to book into La Ciboulette. We wanted an easy walk from our apartment, which was in the heart of the old town. It was only about...150 meters away and, as we found, a very good choice.
The a la carte and fixed menus offered attractive options, including the usual beef and fish. The entrees included traditional Burgundy dishes, such as escargot and jambon persille, and I chose the latter. Others in my group went for soup or salad. Each was well prepared and presented and delicious.
Because I needed an excuse to order a glass of Pommard, my main course was a mock filet of beet, medium rare. I was disappointed in the Pommard (my fault; it was just too subtle for my peasant tastes) but not in the steak and garnishes.
Others ordered fish, perhaps a see bass, I cannot recall, and pronounced it excellent: crispy skin and fish just right. They paired it
with a Macon Milly Lamartaine or a Montagny 1er cru.
Yes, the wine list was excellent, even by the glass.
We shared a dessert of four chocolate confections—mousse, cake, pot de creme, and ?—each was which was hugely chocolate in its own way. My wife, who says “if it’s not chocolate, it’s not dessert,” said it was the best chocolate dessert she had had in a very long time.
The atmosphere is quite casual, most seating indoors in two rooms, and the staff seemed to be family—mom running front of house, assisted by son, maybe dad running the kitchen.
Because La Ciboulette is toward the north end of the very compact old town, it avoids the parades of tourists with whom many Beaune diners in other areas have to share their dining experience.
The cost was quite reasonable, under 40 euros per person, I think, including some glasses of wine at 12-14 euros per.More
