Another great restaurant recommended by our host. We met up with family and friends for a table of 6. We thoroughly enjoyed our selection of meals and enjoyed a lovely aperitif to start. I experienced tripe for the first time and the flavours were well...More

Warm place, from the staff greetings to the end. Delicious food and very attentive service. We have dined here two times during our 8-days stay in Bayonne. À ne pas manquer: la piperade, la terrine de truite, le tournedo Rossini. Once again in Bayonne, we...More

Named for the wicker scoop used in jai alai, this restaurant offered a combination of Basque and SW French traditions and was deep in the old quarter. We began with a shared plate of white asparagus, poached egg, and a slice of Bayonne ham, a...More

We ate here twice whilst in bayonne as it served vey good quality food. The meat was lean and good quality, and the fish dishes fantastic. Highly recommended.

We dined here our first night in Bayonne and it set the mood for our Basque country tour. The décor is interesting: pelota baskets and classic posters everywhere. The proprietor, a former professional jai alai player, came by to chat and knew our area of...More

This restaurant deserves the 5* rating I have given. It was recommended by the owner of the AirBnB I was staying in Bayonne. The fish soup brilliant, the garlic Hake superb and the Basque cake sweet and coffee as good. All in all at €35 including...More

This small restaurant came recommended by the bar next door who told us that we would be unlikely to get a table. We telephoned and were granted a table at 7.30 on a Thursday evening. By 8.00 it was full and little wonder. Great family...More

It is not easy to find a table for six for lunch in a very busy restaurant on a rainy day, we were asked to check in in an hour and sure enough the table was ready. The food was excellent, I had Bayonne ham...More

Lovely food. Great staff. Wonderful salad, hake dish, dessert. No complaints. Except the noise level can be immense. Avoid or eat outdoors when the group's are in the place.

Description
Downtown, between the Cathedral Sainte Marie and the town hall you'll find the famous " Chistera" . Sixty years ago the Marmouyet family created this restaurant , a must in Bayonne. In 1990 Jean Pierre Marmouyet and his wife Maite came back from the USA ( he was a great Jai Alai player in Connecticut and Florida) to take over the family basque restaurant. You'll find it in numerous guides (GaultMillau, le Hubert, le Petit Fute, le Pudlo, le Bottin Gourmand, le Ballarin, le Lonely Planet, Michelin guide vert, le Routard, rough guide… The house spirit: a traditional basque cooking harmonized with fresh products and very kind prices . The fresh hake"koskera", the "piperade", the farm chicken "a la basquaise", the basque cake home made ...should not be missed. same flavors, same courses revisited as the years go by. Jean-Pierre was a professional Jai Alai player, their son Jean Jo is a professional rugby player and guess what ? He 's playing in Bayonne a" l'Aviron Bayonnais" , he began 17 years ago in Bayonne...and never played somewhere else . You know now why you you'll meet so many regulars , you better have a reservation but be sure that anyway they always welcome you with open arms. The place to go : Le Chistera !
