Website said open all day.. Turned up at 11.30a, to see door open and then arrogantly told to come back in 1/2hr by I believe Manager/Owner saying he'd come from a funeral.. Came back, he was hoovering.. Waited, waited.. When seated I ordered Euro 56...starters/main course (no drinks).. Immediately, I knew oysters were from previous day, being dry.. The jumbo prawn & smoked salmon cocktail was old.. Smoked Salmon was not fresh and a small sliver and dry.. The 'Jumbo' prawns were 4 tiny prawns.. The 'Sizzling Tiger Prawns & Scallops' again, prawns were tiny and only 4 small scallops with no taste of the salty sea.. Came with salad & chips.. Salad was exact same salad served with Prawn & smoked salmon cocktail and chips were skinny frozen chips.. This is what I do as a hobby, travel the world enjoying (or not) local food.. The food was day old (at least), chips were frozen, same salad as in cocktail, and Manager/Owner arrogant with massive ego.. The waitress turned up halfway through my lunch, telling me he could have had the waitress, or, another person open up rather than a cock and bull story of a funeral.. This is the 2nd bad experience I've encountered at The SIlver Fox and the last.. Days prior I ate at Mary Berry's, Kilmore and was incredibly delicious... Scallops were large, fresh, and could taste the sea.. The Cod was also fresh and delicious.. I believe The SIlver Fox is over rated and obviously does not use the same supplier as Mary Berry's.. Nothing classy at all and over pricedMore
We were slowly progressing east towards Rosslare and our homeward ferry, and spent the middle of the day in Kilmore Quay, mainly enjoying its fine dunes and beach (also many fine thatched cottages). We had worked up quite an appetite and chose the Silver Fox...for lunch. We had delicious main courses and desserts, all served by attentive staff in a room whose walls were decorated with original oils by a local artist.
Covid had disrupted our 2020 plans, but at that stage we had been due to stay in Kilmore Quay. I can tell you now, if we ever do so in the future, we will head straight here for dinner.
On the day we visited the weather had turned warm and blue. A fish and chip restaurant next door with outside tables was clearly packed and had people waiting. We had spotted Silver Fox earlier and knew it to be just round the corner. It has more decorum and less of a close to the sea ambience. I think that's why I can more easily envisage an evening meal there, although there's no question it was the best lunch we had in our whole holiday.
Note: TripAdvisor asks for a classification between 'cheap eats - mid range - fine dining'. I've said 'mid range' because it's a welcoming place that isn't pretentious. However, the food quality and menu choices show imagination and flair, and the wine list looked pretty fair - shame we were driving!More
We went for a meal for our wedding anniversary. The food was faultless. We both had crab salad for starters and I had duo of hake and turbot for main and my husband had the duck. My fish was perfectly cooked and plentiful, husband's duck...was the best he had to date. We finished up with rhubarb crumble and raspberry creme brulee with coffee. Cracking good coffee btw.
The service was really good and we were made to feel special. All in all a lovely evening. We will definitely be back.More
Party of 4 for Sunday dining. The restaurant is lovely inside and staff are very professional but also friendly and engaging. Menu read well and food was very very good. Great mussels and stunning sizzling monfish. Trios included plaice , dory, dover sole, hake, brill...etc. The only dud note was cappuccinos that looked too white and lacked a proper coffee kick. It's still a 5 star restaurant despite this and we look forward very much to returning at nightMore
I had booked a table for 2 on a saturday evening, 6.45pm. We were running about 10 minutes late, we rang and told them we would be late and that was fine.
We arrived at 6.55pm, we were greeted by a friendly waitress and shown...to our table.... we were not very impressed as we were seated between 2 other couples and there was most definitely NOT 1 meter between each table, we felt very uncomfortable and it was not relaxing at all, we didnt have much choice as the restaurant was full.
We were given our menus and told about the specials, we placed our orders after a few minutes of browsing the menu. I opted for the monkfish and scallops and my other half went for the steak medallions on portobello mushroom. (29.95 each)
We waited and waited and waited some more whilst many others who arrived after us had their food sent to them, we wondered to ourselves, "what was the problem? Why arent we getting our food?"
40 minutes had passed and we were still sat there without our food, finally on the 45th minute it arrived!!
The monkfish while presented beautifully, was the smallest piece of monkfish I have ever seen, it was smaller than the palm of my hand and all of 3 scallops the rest was mushroom and onions.(the monk fish was not pleasant, the scallops were lovely but only had 3 of them) I was shocked because at €29.95 I had expected more and especially with the long wait.
The other half said his medallion was very bland and they were not 8oz! The only saving grace for him was the mushroom sauce which he devoured with the side of chips.
To be honest I just wanted to leave after the disastrous waiting and the meal. We absolutely loved the silver fox before covid, but it has gone down hill and we will not be returning again.More
Tried Mary Barry's on the night first .. couldn't get a table. Headed to Silver Fox. Plenty empty tables made us suspicious. We had chicken which was nice but the mushroom sauce had some bought powdered element which let it down. Veg was unimaginative..plenty turnip....Desserts were overpriced for the quality. Coffee was good. Wouldnt go back.More
Had a fabulous meal at the Silver fox, crab claws to start and the amazing lobster platter well worth the money. The only disappointing little thing was the cheese board, there was no chutney served or cracker selection. Overall a really lovely experience and the...staff were excellent.More
Visited here for meal with my husband. In locality for nearly a week and this was my third attempt to book as it closed Mondays and Tuesdays but third time lucky for us. My husband had special starter of crab meat with mango and loved...every bit. I loved my prawn and salmon starter with a lovely salad. Fantastic flavours with brown bread. Had the special pan fried fish which was fab and scampi as main course. Even went the whole way with beautiful rhubarb crumble and strawberry meringue nests. Great service with friendly smile.More
