Firstly, if you forget to stop here, don't expect to eat on the beach. Fire was on, the food was Michelean star. Mussels and best chowder I ever had. Don't forget to stop, you will not regret it, excellent prices too.

We visit Mayo a couple of times a year and we always make sure we get to The Tavern whilst we are over there. The food is excellent quality, we went twice on our recent trip with my Burger Meal and the Fish & Chips...being very very tasty. The deserts are equally good, i enjoyed the Apple Pie and the Fruit Crumble which were beautiful. Friendly helpful staff and lovely food, you cant go wrong! I look forward to visiting again next year when we are back :-)More

Oh my goodness, this food was incredible. I had the mussels which were heavenly and the beautiful velvety tomato basil soup. Sublime. My goddaughter had the vegetable soup and a wonderful Caesar salad. She also raved. Beautiful respite on a really blustery day. Great service,...very reasonable prices. Fresh and beautifully prepared food.More

After a very long day, we got a table and I had a dish (name escapes me) that was scallops in the shell with mashed potatoes on top and a sauce that would melt your heart. I simply cannot remember when I have had something...that amazing for dinner! It was FANTASTIC! Service was lovely and we'll be back!More

We were recommended to visit here at least once on our trip to Mayo and aren’t we glad we did. It’s a beautiful bar and restaurant that felt like a home from home when you walked in. Staff were friendly and the tables are spaced...out at a comfortable distance were you do not feel on top of each other. Then we move on to the food and the main courses we ordered were simply delicious, we ordered the special feathered beef and it is truly one of the best dishes I’ve tried on my travels. If you’re down this way, make sure to call in as you’d certainly be missing out on great food if you didn’tMore

Great on every level; we’d had a recommendation from locals and when we arrived on a Monday evening we feared we wouldn’t get a table, the place was packed! The maitre d was superb; said there might be a wait but we could sit at...the bar - which was well stocked and had the excellent local Mescan beers plus others and a decent wine list. We were seated within 15 minutes of walking in at a cosy table and our meals were excellent. We had a minced spiced lamb starter which was delicious, a chicken and salmon dish each and shared the fruit crumble. The food and service was faultless. We had service from 6 different members of staff and each one were a credit to the Tavern!More

Had an evening meal - glad we booked ahead. This place was buzzing with busy staff getting through work with precision whilst creating great atmosphere. We were welcomed and seated promptly. Ordered scallops, black pudding for starters which were cooked to perfection. Both of us...ordered organic salmon which was served on a bed of root vegetables. We thoroughly the mains, the flavours of the vegetables were perfect. Dessert was Irish whiskey crème brûlée-again it was just a perfect finish to our meal. We ordered water and beers during the meal which were promptly served. We were both amazed at the efficiency and friendliness of staff. The quality of food was amazing. Well done to all staff in this establishment!More

This restaurant has so many awards and accolades that it doesn't need a review from me, but when you enjoy some place so much you have to go back within two days..... The staff are lovely. Pleasant, welcoming, professional, accommodating. Our first visit was 8pm...on a Friday. Luckily we had booked, as the place was incredibly busy. The ambience is interesting and nice, there are fishing and old industry memorabilia on walls as well as modern art mixed with old photos. Eclectic. We made the mistake of having a starter. Seafood chowder. Gorgeous, creamy, big chunks of fish and potato. For mains he had mussels (what else!) Gorgeous fat things in the most sublime broth. I had seafood linguine. Lovely creamy sauce, loads of seafood, and nicely al dente pasta. Unfortunately, we couldn't finish it, despite desperately wanting to. And by the way if you are a Guinness fan, you have to have a pint, or two. Him indoors loved his. They pour it real slow as it should, then make you wait as it settles temptingly on the bar....I decided on a whiskey, and there was a selection of Jameson on the display. I asked the bar lady, and she recommended Caskmate. She wasn't wrong Mmmm! Our next visit was Sunday lunch. Not that busy at 1pm, but was so by the time we left. We both had mountain mutton sausages, in this gorgeous onion sauce, with proper mash, real tasty. To finish we both had Irish coffees. Lovely. There are tables outside if you want to eat al fresco, and they offer blankets in case its' getting cold while you eat. There is parking by the roadside. For the quality of the food and drink, the accolades held by this place, the prices are very reasonable, and I have to tell you you'd be daft not to visit if you are in the area.More

There is a reason why this place was packed to capacity on a wet Friday night. We came on 1st of July, a party of five with a 100 year old member of our party. We had booked, but as soon as we entered the...reserved table was considered unsuitable because of our senior guest and a new table, not up a step, was commandeered and sorted in seconds. The staff were polite and friendly, very quick to serve us, the food took no length to come either. The 10oz sirloin was cooked to perfection, served on a bed of fried mushrooms and onions and without doubt the best steak I have ever tasted. The burger was also beautifully cooked and presented. Two of our party had fish and chips, divine and the last had the seafood pie, also fantastic. Considering how packed the place was, the standard of food and service was far beyond our expectations.. Thank you and long may you continue! XxMore

Decided to visit the Tavern in Murrisk last Sunday late afternoon as was passing through to Louisburgh – hadn’t been here since Covid. I had booked a table for two in advance – my 12 year old daughter and myself. We arrived at 3.45 –...so as the restaurant would not be too busy – which is wasn’t but we still had to wait a considerable time to be seen by someone at the “seated” sign. We were shown to our table and our server was very friendly. My daughter ordered mussels at the recommendation of the server and the mussels with chili, tomato and coriander. The mussels, themselves, were very tasty and fresh – unfortunately the bread was stale and inedible. It was obvious that this bread was most probably not baked on the premises and had been left uncovered for some time hence it had become stale. I informed the server of this issue and she did offer to replace it but I decided to refrain. Unfortunately, the main courses were not much better. I ordered the “Roast Beef” with mash, veg and Yorkshire pudding – my server assured me it was “28 day matured sirloin” – how could I refuse? My daughter ordered kids fish and mash and vegetables (she asked to substitute the mash for chips but the vegetables must have been removed to make room for the chips as they never arrived!). I always worry when a server tells me – “mind the plate is very hot” – that usually means that the food has been kept at a different temperature to the plate for some time – usually that is fine but in this instance the plate was piping hot and the beef was only lukewarm in the middle – I decided to persevere and finished my meal. In general it was tasty but quite tough to the point that I had to ask for a steak knife as I could not cut it properly with the standard kitchen drawer knife supplied. My daughter’s fish was a decent portion but unfortunately the chips were measly looking and it was obvious that they had been left out of the frier for some time – they were far from crisp. I wondered was it just us and were we unfortunate to have come at a bad time etc.. But alas the family beside me were growing very impatient as their main course had not arrived for some time – apologies were offered form the server. When one of their meal’s arrived – a steak sandwich – the lady had to send it back as she informed them it was also “freeing cold” in the middle. As for value for money – hmmmmm. If you are going to charge €21.95 for roast beef, mash and veg then it better be the best roast beef in the West – unfortunately this was not the case – far from it. My daughter’s Fish & Chips was €9.50 – again if charging a premium price it needs to be much better fare. My daughter was keen on desert – but when I looked at the kids chocolate option I nearly fell off the chair - €7.50 – for a kids dessert is extortionate I’m afraid to say. In fairness to our server she asked did we enjoy our meal – I explained to her the disappointments – she seemed a little taken aback and said she would pass on the feedback. There was no real offer of recompense (maybe a dessert on the house – a free soft drink for my daughter etc.…) I wasn’t really looking for a freebie but the offer would’ve been something. I paid the bill and left. It’s such a shame to see The Tavern charge a premium price for their offerings and provide such average food. Yes standards have definitely plummeted in The Tavern since Covid!More
