We visited them at lunch time, so for a quick bite, we ordered their Fish & Chips, Chicken Ceaser Salad and BBQ Chicken Wings.
All very well cooked and tasty!
Their fish batter style actually is my favourite way of fried fish. Just delicious 🤤
Very central and with great history to research about it.
The service was very friendly and quick, and the place is following the main government’s guidelines to guarantee the safety of their clients and staff members.

Dropped in here for lunch recently, had no booking but we were easily accommodated. Good set up in terms of space between tables, staff were very helpful. We shared a platter between 2 which was exactly what we were looking for, a good mix of nibbles if you're unsure of what you want. The pint of Guinness was solid and I would definitely return.

Great to be able to revisit our favourite local restaurant after so long!
As usual, the food is brilliant and the staff were so welcoming to us. It was like visiting old friends, the atmosphere is great even in these tough times.
I can recommend the Crispy Brie and my husband is a big fan of the Steak here, we usually always get the same things as it is so consistent in quality.
Nice selection of Gins and tonics.
Matt the Millar's never disappoints!

We visited kilkenny for a day trip and rang to reserve a table for our family of five. Friendly staff, helpful & enthusiastic. My 11 year old had pizza and it was beautiful, obviously made from scratch, it was super fresh and tasty. My 18 year old had the ricotta which was also very enjoyable & tasty. Husband had steak which was ok only & l had fish & chips. Sadly l drew the short straw with the food as the fish & chips were not fresh but frozen & they were dry and tasteless so l was disappointed, left my fish and shared my sons pizza instead.
We were offered dessert menus but declined ordering desserts as they were all priced just short of €8 each. A bowl of ice cream priced at €8 is excessive as is a brownie priced at just under €8. As a family of 5 we could not justify paying €40 for three bowls of ice cream and 2 brownies. The pricing is inconsistent with the quality of the grub.
We wondered if the pricing is high because they are usually not reliant on returning trade and mostly service a tourist industry which turns over quickly. Overall as a family we were not that impressed with Matt the Millers, it is a little tired & smells a little stale, 3 dishes out of our five were nice, 2 were not.To end on a positive note the staff were nice lads who were attentive and friendly.

I have never left a review anywhere before but how myself and my friends were treated in here was a disgrace and warrants it... We entered and a very rude staff member seated us. We got the menus and asked could we share the large platters between us to get us each over the nine euro requirement so we could have a drink (perfectly acceptable but we wanted to check it was okay here too), to which he swore at us and said he wouldn’t tolerate any BS. He walked off to get the drinks but we could see him pointing over at our table and some other staff members came over to look at us- very unsubtly too, they weren’t particularly good at being rude. He came back with the drinks and when I asked why he was gossiping about us when we hadn’t done anything wrong he said “if you don’t like it you can leave”. So we did. On the way out another couple who had just gotten engaged they told us had gotten the same treatment from him, and couldn’t believe it after being recommended the place from friends... The staff member in question was 40s/50s, small with glasses and a horrible attitude. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

The barman took all the good out of what would have been a very pleasant visit. We were just calling in to have Sunday lunch and should have walked out from the moment we walked in the door - this middle aged barman with greased back hair was rude, sarcastic and unwelcoming. He behaved as if he owned the place and treated us as though we were a huge inconvenience to him (which is surprising as the place was almost empty in what should be prime time on for Sunday dinner time). Would have stayed for drinks but left as soon as we ate our poorly prepared food due to the poor treatment we received from this one member of staff

Had a family meal here end of July, they wouldn’t accept vaccination card and proof of identification so we had outdoor dinning upstairs with the window removed . The food was awful , Cajun burger was like a frozen chicken fillet in breadcrumbs and deep fried. Cajun burger it definitely was not. The Pepperoni pizza was tasteless. No Rose wine . Won’t be returning.

Three in our party, had stew, steak and burger. Drinks and food were served promptly with a smile from a young man who told me he was from north Kilkenny. There was a duo playing Irish music in the background and were not too loud, we could have a chat without shouting but the choice of folk/Irish music was delightful. We could spent an evening listening to them. A lady came round to check if everything was fine. Well the food in all three cases was delicious, the stew one of our party loved, as far as the steak goes the taste of the brandy/pepper sauce was also quite pleasant. Three empty plates went back. All in all this was a most pleasant experience after a long drive heading home.

We stopped here for a late lunch. The staff was very friendly, the menu was just the right size for pub-grub, not too large, and not too small. They also had specials to choose from. We were a party of five, and all were pleased with their food and drink choices. The pub from the road appears small, but once inside it is fairly large with plenty of seating choices, both in the bar and dining areas. Would definitely return for another visit! Prices were reasonable.

Thank you to all the staff at Matt the Millars for hosting our group on 13 April.
Brendan and his team were so helpful in terms of arranging our entertainment, food and private reception area. This took a huge amount of pressure off me in terms of organising everything.
We arrived at the venue early before opening on Saturday and the bar staff were so good to let us in to set up and decorate.
The location was perfect for our needs. It’s really central, clean and full of atmosphere. We got platters of lovely finger food (prawns, chicken, wings etc) which were very reasonably priced.
We were well looked after with yummy Prosecco and a bar opened and staffed just for us (a group of 20). Everyone was so lovely and really made our day.
Thanks again to Brendan and all the staff. Highly recommend and we’ll be back for sure!

Always love calling here but today was my first time since lockdown. What a lovely experience we had .. great welcome at the door from John and no booking just walk in. I asked could I go to the Tobacco shop upstairs as the roof was open and it was a beautiful day no problem at wherever you want to go !! Lots of people in but all socially distance !! And the food what can I say as always superb !! The seafood chowder was amazing crammed with fish followed by fish and chips and pizza which where both excellent !! Service by Karina and Conor was excellent and done with a smile !

If you have the patience to wait for an hour for the food here while being ignored by the staff - you might actually enjoy the large portions. We ordered 5 dishes for our table. The salad arrived after 5 minutes, followed by 45 minutes of being completely ignored by the staff. Even though the place was not too busy, for 45 minutes nobody stopped at our table to see if we got the rest of the dishes, clear out the beer glasses and salad plate that we had already finished, or refill the water jar. Only after we realized that all the tables that ordered after us had already received their food - we called a waiter, who said that he will check but moved to attend another table. We had to call another waiter, who went to check and then informed us that it will take another 10 minutes to get our food. Overall we waited for about an hour to get our overdone steak and other (mostly tasty) food. The waiter only made a very weak “I’m sorry for the wait” apology. We will not return here.

Matt the Millers was one of a few places recommended by the owner of the B&B where we stayed while in Kilkenny for the night. We arrived right before the dinner rush and sat near the back but still within view of the bar and the area where they had live music for the night. My wife ordered a dish that was chicken stuffed with blood sausage and wrapped in bacon. She said it was excellent. I ordered an Irish beef stew that was also very good. Their drink prices were reasonable.
Service was good and attentive. Towards the end of our meal, the live music for the night started. It was a duet (guitar and flute) who played traditional Irish music. They were excellent and as the place filled up more, the crowd was very lively and into both the food and the music.
A note for travelers from the US: tipping in Ireland works differently. In the US we are used to tipping 15-20% as a matter of fact. Servers in Ireland do not necessarily expect a tip (they get paid more than servers in the US) and if you pay for your meal with a credit card, they will run the exact amount on your bill. If you want to add a tip onto your card, you need to tell them how much to add before they run your card so they will run the amount with the tip. Tipping is also less than the US: a typical tip runs between 10-15% for exceptional service. Anything above 15% will be viewed as extra, extra special. You may not decide to tip at all. The rules for tipping bartenders at the bar are different than what I have just explained, but we never did that and I don't remember what it is.

I can safely say it was the worst service we ever experienced. The bar man was very rude, sarcastic and ignorant. Food was to a poor standard, the pizza was not freshly made. Unaccommodating and unhelpful staff, they never checked in on the table once after serving the food.
