Visited the evening after Storm Debi. Looking for hot & hearty & McDonoughs didn’t disappoint. Very nice hostess/order taker explained difference between Cod & Chips (which is a baked cod pie) and their classic fish & chips. Took the latter along with cole slaw &...a Guinness. Got here a few minutes before 6 & no waiting. By 6:15 place was packed. Fish came out a few minutes later. It was cooked perfectly. Batter very light, fish & chips well fried and tasty. Portions ample for the price. (Actually way too many chips but that’s the custom.). Helped me forget all the trouble Debi caused getting me to Galway!More

Great fish and chips at a reasonable price, it's an eat in restaurant with lots of atmosphere, shared a table with locals and had some great conversation. Truly an authentic part of Ireland. Richard Fanning Snowdon Halifax Nova Scotia Canada

I’ve had way better fish and chips, not just here or Britain but in other countries where this recipe is not at all part of their culture. Good batter and good ketchup. But, harder than crisp chips and sadly cod, the main attraction, was way...overcooked and chewy in texture. Also the hundreds of mussels glued on the ceiling and the wood beams don’t say nice ambiance but rather, germ alert.More

Our tour guide recommended this place. Great food. But don’t expect 5 star treatment. Lol. Get in line. Order. Move. Had the chicken. Scampi and fish and chips.

If you like fish and chips, this is as good as it gets. Traditional cod, but also salmon, ray, smoked fish. Informal, reasonably priced, friendly service.

We were quite disappointed in this restaurant. The fish was hot and crispy but some of the batter was uncooked and the chips were not very hot.

Enjoy the lightest tastiest fish and chips! We sat outside and watched the people stroll by. The fish was well cooked and the outside was the thinnest, lightest and most delicious. Well worth a wait if you arrive at a busy time.

Chips were rock hard soaked in greese. I returned them and got the same ones back. Left my meal behind.

The food was decent. I’ve certainly had worse fish and chips. But then, I have also most certainly had better. The serving sizes are great — a large chips will feed two or more people quite easily. And the fish was fresh! The issue here...was the customer service. Sure, it was a very busy and chaotic day. All three of the staff members I interacted with however, were very rude, dismissive, and acted as if they did not want the customers there at all. Overall, I wouldn’t return. Given the vast selection of cafes, bars, and restaurants in Galway, I’d look to dine somewhere that is slightly more enjoyable.More

We had lunch here - the fish was fine (we had the hake) although one of our meals was not fully cooked. The service was average and the chips were terrible compared to other popular establishments. No care factor, no garnish or salad like other...restaurants - suggest rather choose somewhere else for lunch.More
