Recomended by a local friend as "the best fish 'n' chips around", it surely lives up to its reputation. The fish was fresh, chips was really chips and not french potato, on each table there was salt and malt vinegar. So simple and yet so tasty. Fast food at its best. If you visit Galway, go try fish 'n' chips at McDonaghs.

Whenever we visit Galway our first port of call is always McDonaghs. The staff are always friendly, welcoming and most helpful. Their fish is succulent and their chips so tasty and their portions are huge. Make sure you call to McDonaghs if you're looking for quality and quantity.

We read that this was the very best fish & chips place in Galway. Well, it is. There is counter service all day long with picnic table seating and also a small sit down restaurant with limited hours next to it. The fish is delicious with a large menu for different options of dishes and types of fish. The portions are HUGE. I did one portion of takeaway back to our room and it was more than enough for 2 of us. Go hungry and enjoy

This was recommended by our tour guide. We chose the table service side of the restaurant. We only waited about 5 minutes for a table for a party of 6. We ordered mussels and oysters to start then ordered fish and chips all around. Everything was delicious. Definitely worth another visit and worth the wait if there is a line.

Maybe it's Covid, but we always came here on our trips to Galway. Was always a fantastic fish n' chips treat, old style. Utterly disappointed this week, arrived, reheated food plopped on counter before I even paid. They had nothing we wanted from the menu, no drinks we wanted. Offered tap water! No thanks! Food was not edible, chicken had no meat, loos were dirty, had to serve myself and family. Staff didn't care. Particularly the lady at the till. What a shame, end of a fine Galway tradition. Won't be back.

A friend of mine was raving about this place so when we finally gave in and went along we were very glad we did! I had the Ray and Chips and it was cooked to perfection 👌 The batter was crispy and the ray was tender. I'm not a huge fan of chips most of the time but I finished these ones off! So tasty. I will definitely be visiting again when I'm back in Galway.

Ok. Back story: former Seattlelite now living in AZ craving fish n chips. On a mission the have the best fish and Chip experience as I meander around Ireland in May 2019 ( not August). First: atmosphere: 10/10. Holy cow is this fun, just the menu alone decreased the storage in my camera by 20%. Where else can you get smashed peas, haggis and octopus? So then, Menu: 10/10. The fish and chips I received almost made me giddy with excitement. Fresh, HUGE portions, nice and crispy, no greasy afterwash, flakey tender fish , did I say fresh??. Note: McDonagh's featured the largest ketchup bottles I've seen on the face of the earth. Just another piece of goofy trivia for me. This place satisfied all of my Fish and Chip needs for the next two days in Galway. 10/10 on my scale. No they didn't sponsor me for this review. 😊 Thank you.

If you're in Galway and looking for that quick and easy fish and chips fix then look no further! While this venue may have a more quiet sit down area, my experience amongst the packed benches and seats along the window was nonetheless brilliant! The atmosphere is authentic with "fast" food not being fast-food. The menu is simple and easy to follow as you make your selection for what can only be described as magnificent fish (of varying sorts) and a huge portion of chips. Great for a pre-night out bit of grub or a halftime lunch.

Went here today for lunch. Had fish and chips. The chips were outstanding. The deep fried cod had soggy batter and the fish had an unpleasant aftertaste. I left about half of it behind. The man collecting plates didn't bother to ask how everything was, but they're so busy here I doubt they mind the occasional problem so I didn't bother to say anything either. Everywhere has an off day, so I'll likely go back to see, but not as good as it was previously based on today.

this eatery has both a formal restaurant and informal takeaway/sit down section to the establishment. we sampled the great seafood chowder and the fresh cod on offer and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Note the place is very busy, with the takeaway line up of people lengthy.

I had this place recommended by a Dub fellow as the best place for fish in Galway City, but it turned up to be just ordinary. Fried potatoes and battered fish, without much extravagance. Although if one is going there, he can't expect much more than that. You can tell that the oil was properly hot though, as neither fish nor chips were soaked with oil, but just properly crispy.

Despite the very simple location, we were attracted by the glowing reputation and numerous awards and positive reviews online. However, after being promptly served up a plate of cod and chips with onion rings, we were immediately surprised by its poor presentation: the fish resembled a large spring roll, as the batter was weak and extremely oily. The same could be said for the onion rings and the tartar sauce which had an unusual taste. After the first bite, the crispy and oily batter fell away. Overall the food was quite tasteless and we’re glad we didn’t have any stomach problems afterwards. Don’t even get me started on the state of the cutlery which was questionably washed. To sum up: the worst fish and chips that we’ve eaten in our lives. Just to give a more detailed description of how oily this experience was, picture that teen who worked at Krusty Burger in the Simpsons. Yep, that’s being generous. But like Arctic Monkeys said: “Don’t believe the hype”.

Visited here with my wife and kids and I have to say I was disgusted with the attitude from the staff, the toilets were disgraceful and the food even worse. I had the mackerel and it wasn’t fresh at all. It was soggy, and completely tasteless. It was definitely in the deep freezer for weeks! I was completely shocked that a fast food restaurant in the centre of Galway would serve such terrible food. My wife had the fish and chips and hers was also disgusting. If you’re in the area of shop street, avoid this place like the plague. Never, ever, ever again! Make a trip to MacDonalds, you’d get better food and service with a smile!

The fish was fresh and the breading was not too heavy or too oily. The chips were just fine. If you want a casual meal in Galway- great place, and inexpensive. There are lots of choices on the menu. We had been traveling for awhile, and sometimes eating out 3 times a day can be a chore and you just want something simple. Great part of town too.
