Either Il Vicolo got lucky the day Michelin called, or I got unlucky. First the positive. The setting is fantastic, in a really old atmospheric space in the basement of a truly historic building on the river bank. The walls ooze with charm, showing evidence...of sensitive maintenance. This quality is not diluted by bright artificial lighting, to the extent that your eyes are drawn to the views of flowing water outside. The staff were courteous and efficient, knowledgeable about the food choices on the delightful menu, and obviously well trained. Three different people were involved serving me at different times, and it was seamless. I opted for the clam and monkfish linguine main course which was adequate but not wow, and certainly not something that would excite the palate of a Michelin reviewer, in my opinion. The dessert was a complete disappointment. Advertised as a pavlova, it consisted of a small circular meringue of the sort sold in packets in any grocery store. My server insisted that it was prepared in the kitchen, which did not help because it tasted bland when it could have provided some sweetness to the otherwise cheerless (and tiny) compote of fruits. In case you think I am being unfair in my comments, see the photo, with spoon included for scale. I am a huge fan of restaurateurs in Ireland because they are the heroic front line of tourism attractions. I do not like giving negative reviews and mostly find a reason to award at least four stars, but on this trip to Galway I left feeling disappointed and ripped off for paying €8.50 for that poor dessert. I will pay Il Vicolo another visit, in the hope that I caught them on a bad day, and will be glad to revise upwards my assessment.More

We had booked a table for 3pm for 5 adults & 2 children , arrived at 2.50 and waited for them to open , starters arrived at 3.30 and main courses at 4.40 an hour and 10 minutes later, yet we were asked to leave...the table at 5pm as they had it rebooked, this is not acceptable and we refused to leave until we ordered desserts which we did and even though they needed the table so badly we waited another 20 mins for desserts . Staff seriously stressed out and so rude the owner needs to sort this out and of course service charge is included in bill otherwise we would not have left a tip as the service was so bad, feel so bad for staff working under these conditions it’s not their fault and you can see they are so unhappy doing their job not enough of them Mary GalwayMore

As locals in Galway, we do, and have always, frequented Il Vicolo by ourselves, with our friends and have recommended it to all our London friends on their trips to Galway, but last night was a blow-out amazing night! The food was absolutely fabulous -...this restaurant strives in every way to keep reinventing itself and updating and enhancing the menu and last night was no exception. We decided rather than having a main course that we would have several items from the Primi Piatti. So glad that we did - we had the most amazing delectable flavours of Sicilian Buratta, Tuscan beef and pork meatvalls, wild mushroom agnolotti, Killary Fjord mussels, pan roasted nduja aioli and parmesan potatoes. They came in great proportions and we enjoyed every mouthful. This is a stunning restaurant, with the best views in Galway overlooking the River, with a mill wheel in the restaurant. The seating is comfortable and everyone has privacy whilst dining. You can have a pre-dinner drink overlooking the river from the lovely floral terrace outside the rear of the restaurant. The ambience is buzzing and the staff are young and enthusiastic. Thank you very much Gerry for your kind gesture to make this a great night for us - Gabi and the staff were amazing as always and we will be bringing a few more people with us shortly to enjoy this fantastic experience. Many thanks and kindest regards.More

What an exceptional find, having been to Belfast, Dublin and Cork, it was Galway that we found this absolute Gem. JAZZ music and great Italian food. Booking strongly advised, if it’s sunny have a drink on the terrace first!!

Food - delicious. Ambiance was great - warm, romantic, inviting, cosy. We were a group of five girls and loved it. Although I would love to take my husband for dinner there one day! The staff - all of them - were very professional and...friendly. 10 out of 10. I would go to Galway just to eat here for sure! Enjoyed a recommended lovely red wine as well. Not over priced. Highly recommended.More

I booked a table for my husband for his birthday 4 weeks previously, window seats. When we arrived they gave us a table for 4 not beside window. I asked the waiter could seat next to window, as I had booked. He said no problem...but can you leave at 7pm. Ye have 1 hour 1/2 . We agreed reluctantly. We both ordered special dish of the day and 1 glass of wine. I order turbot fish . I tasted the salsa sauce absolutely salty, too salty, I asked my husband to try he said same. I couldn't eat it. I carefully picked the dish because of my allergies, and intolerance in relation to types of food. My husband decided to tell waiter and refused to eat dish . The evening was starting to decline in mood. A waitress came back to me and gave me the turbot, mashed potatoes and some veg. The line was drawn for my husband, I cant eat mashed potatoes because of my allergies, at this point my husband advised waitress we were not happy and said we will leave both dinners and leave, waitress said calm down relax to my husband , waitress said ok il get you bill and leave immediately,, bill for glass of wine. I found this rude and very unprofessional, as waitress never asked me what can I do for you in regards second dish, she just arrived with mashed potatoes which I would have allergic reaction. I paid for glass of wine and left. Never asked to leave restaurant.....very wrong.More

Buuuaaahaaahaaa! Are there any nice bars nearby? This is Galway, Ireland. There are not just "any good bars." There are a zillion good bars! Including The Kings Head - 800 years old. Have fun on the pub crawl!
