What a great little discovery. Mary and I had to go into Galway for the day to run errands and do some bit of business and decided along the way to stop for a bite to eat. We stumbled onto this cute and very quaint little restaurant called Alma Restaurant on Lydon Court just around the corner from the TK Maxx store (In the US it is TJ Maxx). Owned by a husband and wife team and are Portugese the food is simply superb. Everything is made from scratch. All of the food is made from fresh ingredients and the quality of food is top notch. Mary had their homemade soup and salad and I had their grilled cheese and ham sandwich. Now most people wouldn't give a second thought to a grilled cheese sandwich because anyone who has had a grilled aka toasted ham and cheese knows they are absolutely miserable sandwiches. White bread, a slice of cheese and a miserable piece of processed ham. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!! This was sandwich was made with fresh baked ham, gorgeous cheddar and a homebaked bread and cooked to perfection. Now that's what a grilled ham and cheese is all about and it was substantial. The little side salad was fresh with a beautiful light dressing was perfect as a side dish. The owners are absolutely delightful and very welcoming and kind. Service is nice and simple. They are Portugese and the food is focused around Portugese home dishes. Lunch is served until 3 or 4pm and dinner starts around 5pm until 9:30. If you are hungry and want great food at good prices in a charming little restaurant with very welcoming owners then Alma's Restaurant is the place to go. Bon Appetit.

Mary & Caryl... thank you, thank you. We are always so happy to read such lovely and kind words. We are firm believers that even the simplest dish deserves to be treated with respect and made the best way possible with corresponding products, we choose them wisely with a very simple condition: if we don't eat it with pleasure we won't sell it, be it a sandwich or an expensive cut of beef. Respect the product and it will respect the customer. Most kind regards. João & Márcia

We went to the Alma restaurant on the opening weekend, the place is very cozy, the service was very good, with the attendants always very attentive. The food we ordered was very well prepared, with a taste of Portuguese and Brazilian food, you can tell that the food is made very carefully. We recommend the restaurant, we will be back soon to try other options on the menu.

Hi! Thank you so much. Your words gave us an immense feeling of happiness, we work everyday to showcase two very rich, yet somehow unknown, cuisines which have centennial ties to each other, and there's no better reward than the satisfaction of our customers. It was a pleasure to have you in Alma Restaurant. Best regards João & Márcia

This restaurant is more unique than rare. I went there with my wife. The welcome was warm. The name Alma comes from the Latin almus, meaning 'to nourish'. They serve delicious dishes, which emphasise the quality of the food. We ate an exquisite Picanha and a very tender rib of beef, served with potatoes and spinach, pure authenticity. We ended dinner with a delicious chocolate maracuja musse, very good! I was very impressed by the aroma of the dishes that stood out above everything, which combined with the well-detailed appearance, surprised my palate. The bill was honest. This restaurant really surprises, I highly recommend it!

At the time we booked, it was rated the best restaurant for dinner in Galway. After checking the menu online we agreed it was a little pricey but since it was the 'best' in Galway it would be worth it. I can't remember the last time we've been so disappointed. We had beef and mushroom for starter to share. It was a decent size dish and the 'broth' was perfectly seasoned. The beef was chewy and unseasoned. It tasted like it should have been cooked longer. We agreed that it was 'nice' but our mains would have to 'wow' us for the meal to redeem itself. The starter turned out to be the highlight. My husband ordered the pork belly. It came with curied rice, which was actually fairly tasty after a decent dose of salt and pepper, albeit luke warm. His pork belly was chewy, difficult to cut through and generally just not good enough. My seafood rice was the most bland meal I can remember having. I really regret not sending it back. After a heavy dose of salt and pepper it was edible. And I did eat it all, mostly because it we had no intention of spending more money on food by leaving hungry. The restaurant itself was nice but fairly empty and the music was barely audible. It probably would have been better to have no music. The service was okay. The waitress seemed nice but it took a couple of attempts to get attention to ask for water, then salt and pepper. Half way through we were asked how everything was and my husband annoyingly said 'great'. We should have at least given honest feedback, although this would have been awkward as there were some other diners. Overall this was an underwhelming experience and the restaurant has no business being rated the best in town.

Dear Andrea Thank you for your review. We disappointed ourselves reading your wordsv and we can only apologize for it. Indeed there were some staff issues that hampered the usual standard of service and food for which we are well know, although it my sound like a feeble excuse, as the co-owner, chef and ultimately responsible for everything that happens in the kitchen I present my mea culpa to you. As so many other reviewers commented, our waitress has always primed for a friendly and cheerful service, as the other half of Alma she has a keen eye for detail and is always a step ahead of our guests needs to avoid unreasonable delays for things like water or salt, such an attentive service is something we always aim to maintain and has become one of our strong points. That also leads to the sound level of our background music, Alma is a small restaurant with that kind of intimate environment for people to chat and enjoy the moment, and music is just a feature that helps but never overpowers the conversation. Due to our size if it played louder people would have to raise their voice and soon the cozyness would be gone. As for the food I cannot say much because each person looks and tastes a dish in different ways. Seafood rice is a constant in our menu since ever, one of the dishes that was never replaced because it is one of the most beloved. The slow cooked pork belly also entered the menu last October and as been a winner since then. And when a soup or a pint could cost over 6.50€ or a burger charged at 18€ I would say that our prices, far from being "pricey", are in line with general hospitality charges and can be qualified as rather competitive. Faithful to our roots our flavours are based on layers, from the traditional base of garlic, onion, tomato, olive oil to the use of spices so common in the Portuguese cuisine, paprika, cumin, tumeric, cinammon, nutmeg and others, a pinch of salt is just a complement and more than that can overpower the remaining flavours but, once again, one cannot go against ones palate. Summing all up, it saddens us knowing that we weren't able to provide the whole experience you expected. Alma Restaurant rating is the result of our daily hard work, dedication and the opinion of dozen upon dozen of customers whe have visited us and we are always doing our best to be worthy of the credentials we gained since our first day. Kindest regards João & Márcia

We ordered a dish that according to the menu took 30mins to prepare….we were happy with that and decided to share a starter with black pudding ….this in itself took practically half an hour to arrive at the table. We had to ask for water and later bread to soak up the juices from the seafood dish of defrosted clams and mussels. The only saving grace was the bottle of red wine that we ordered. I was very disappointed as I had also been influenced by the reviews and had been looking forward to what I expected to be a very tasty treat.

Thank you for your comment and I want to express my sincere apologies for your bad experience. Our usual policy is to spread our bookings in three or four periods to avoid that kind of situations. As our kitchen is quite small by doing that we try to minimize the wait and maximize the number of people served. Sadly this Saturday was what can be called a "perfect storm", some tables arrived later than what was booked, others come early than expected. That created an immense pressure that not even my long years in the kitchen could help to streamline operations. I'm terribly sorry for letting you down because in the end all the responsibility lies on me. Both as a professional and as a person who loves his culinary heritage, I always catter to serve quality products in the best way possible, and I'm saddened by any little problem, be it large or miniscule. But I'm also an optimist and hope to see you again at Alma Restaurant for a much better experience that would surely make the last Saturday just a forgotten memory. Kindest regards João

This is possibly my favourite restaurant and I'm from Galway. The atmosphere is so relaxed, it's like going to friends for dinner with incredible tasty food to choose from. Best in Galway in my opinion for great value We went for a selection of petiscos (Portuguese version like tapas) as there's nothing like food for sharing. João truly creates food for the soul. They were absolutely delicious and the wine superb. A hidden gem in Galway and highly recommend.

A small cosy family run restaurant. The food is very good. The beef was amazing and the pork belly was also really good. We were chatting to an American tourist and she told us the fish stew was exceptional and the mango cheesecake. Look forward to visiting again soon.

I had very fond memories from (the now defunct) Apoema Bistro in the past and a less than stellar one recently. So I was surprised to see a new name on the old premises and even more surprised to know that the old owners were back in business. it is a sad and long story what happened to them but the important thing is: I can eat here again. I arrived for dinner in their first weekend under a new name and found that the service was great again, the food was expertly cooked again and the place was recommendable again. Just go there, the food is unique in Galway and the Portuguese wines are really a surprise.

Thank you for your kind words. Indeed it was a sad and confusing moment for the last couple of months, but thankfully we are back again. Alma is owned by the same Portuguese-Brazilian couple that created Apoema, and we can focus on the small things again, from the personalized service to the food that reflects our common heritage. We are always working to provide the best possible experience, and in the end the most gratifying thing is the approval of our costumers. Kind regards and hope to see you again. João & Márcia

If you love food and you want to experience something so deliciously exquisite it will leave you in raptures, then you have to go to Alma in Galway. It is a long time since I have eaten in a place so beautifully unpretentious yet run by three people who put their heart and soul into their extraordinary menu! My prawns in tamarind and coconut cream starter was to die for, but then to be transported to heaven again instantly by my pork belly and couscous main was beyond expectation! Finally, by the time my pastel de nata dessert had melted in my mouth I realised that there is a place beyond heaven. We had a scrummy €39 bottle of Portuguese white wine to add further delight to our meal plus a couple of beers and our meal for three was only €118. It is the best £50 I have spent in a very long time. How often these days might we pay for a special night out at a restaurant and still feel like we have been stung by the cost of such a luxury? Not tonight…I walked back to my Airbnb apartment savouring every mouthful one bite at a time!! Thank you Alma! Your Portuguese soul has captured my heart and my taste buds!!

Thank you for your kind words. True to our gastronomic heritage we base our flavors on the portuguese atlantic-mediterranean tradition and, to a historical extent, the brazilian one. Garlic, onion, olive oil, some spices, fresh herbs, all together to make the most of some good irish products. Sticking with tradition is the best way to keep our authenticity. Kind regads João & Márcia

This restaurant is definitely worth a visit. The food was truly amazing. The couple who owns it (and work in the restaurant) have owned very successful restaurants in continental Europe and South America for decades and are invested in making sure the food and service are outstanding. It is two minutes away from the city's main square on foot.

We had a very pleasant meal here. Food is made fresh in a small kitchen. We ordered Beef and mushrooms to start, praws with coconut milk, accompanied by a delicious Portuguese wine. What a beautiful start. For main we had the pork belly and picanha steak cooked to perfection. Too bad there wasn't room for dessert. Place to enjoy good food and wine with very friendly service. I recommend booking as there are few seats. I will be back

Lovely from start to finish. We began with the morcela appetizer, which included marinated apples and red onion and was spectacular. I had the Moqueca fish stew served with rice; so many complex yet balanced flavors, including coconut milk and chili/coriander, that made it absolutely so delicious. My husband had the duck leg, and again, it was the blend of so many different flavors that made it so wonderful. We each had a glass of the 2021 red wine from Douro that they recommended, which was great. The restaurant space itself probably accommodates 30-35 and is cozy without feeling crowded. Our waitress was (I presume) the owner, and she was so incredibly kind and inviting. Definitely check this place out!

Looking for a fantastic meal in a clean, friendly, atmosphere where you can enjoy a conversation with great service? This is the place! It's not on one of the main city center streets but it's only a block over from Eyre Square and well worth the short walk. We stopped for dinner and were greeted immediately and offered a window seat. This is a family restaurant but the quality of the food is some of the best I've experienced. We started with Goat Cheese and Guava which includes honey and walnuts and sweet and spicy guava. It was a perfect starter. For dinner I enjoyed the Beef Short Rib which was not only picture perfect but true melt in your mouth deliciousness. This is a large cut short rib in a sauce that has deep rich flavor. Roasted potatoes and s spinach puree were a perfect complement. I also enjoyed a glass of Lutra by Quinta da Alorna, 2020, Tejo - a wonderful red wine that is smooth and slightly fruity. My partner enjoyed the Moqueca or fish stew that was an amazing blend of Monkfish and king prawns with rice. The unique flavors of coconut milk, chili, and coriander blended to make this dish a treat for your tastebuds. Dessert included Passion Fruit Mousse with chocolate ganache - the perfect light and delicious way to end a meal. The owner-chef came out after we finished our meal and we had a lovely conversation. Alma will be a wonderful memory from our holiday.
