After a few days around the capital tasting local and other cuisines, the motherland called us back to order with an inevitable desire for pizza. Pi Pizzas is among the best pizzerias in the city in numerous gastronomic guides, and so we decided to trust it. Located in an excellent location in the center of Dublin, a few minutes from Trinity College and Temple Bar, Pi Pizzas offers only pizzas, all cooked in a large wood-fired oven, and in limited numbers: around 10 choices are available, but they want to best represent Italy and its most typical ingredients (which are fresh and come directly from the peninsula). The place is frequented mainly by young people and consequently the service is very fast, even if something is left out. The prices are slightly higher than the average of any Italian pizzeria (12.50 for a margherita, 15 for a stuffed pizza), but fully deserved by the pizzas, with Neapolitan-style dough, which are very digestible and tasty. Recommended for an Italian break in the beautiful Irish capital.

With great reviews and being close to our hotel, PI was solid choice for a night when we wanted pizza. At 6:45 PM on a Wednesday evening, the restaurant was full (reservations aren’t accepted) but it was only a 5 minute wait before we were seated. The crowd was local (a good sign), young and loud. Service was excellent. Our beers (Guinness not available!) were served within a minute of placing our orders, and our pizzas arrived in less than 10 minutes. My “Pork and Pineapple” pizza (14.50 €) wasn’t the Hawaiian pizza I was expecting—it had a modest amount of pork sausage rather than ham, and a taste of pineapple without identifiable pieces of pineapple—and was good rather than great. My husband’s “Nduja” pizza (15 €) was the house specialty and looked more interesting; while tasty, he described it as the spiciest pizza he ever had. Bottled beers were 5.50 - 6 €. Good (if not great) pizza, friendly service and an enthusiastic local atmosphere would make me return again.

Thank you Peter for the really comprehensive review :) With the Pork & Pineapple pizza we've tried to bring our own interpretation to it as opposed to the typical 'Ham & Pineapple'. In our case the pineapple is sliced wafer thin on the prosciutto slicer and then it melts into the cheese so doesn't appear visually prominent on the pizza once cooked. There is heat in the Nduja which we balance out with the organic Irish honey that we drizzle over it. Happy to hear that you would return again and I hope that next time we can hit those five stars for you! All the best, John

As a former New Yorker currently living in New Jersey I'm very partial to my pizza. This pizza place was beyond delicious. I went there with my husband and my daughter and granddaughter for dinner. We ordered two pies. And ate every bit of it. It was so delicious very fresh service was excellent and the beer was nice and cold.

I had heard good things about PI Pizza before my trip to Dublin, but was left completely underwhelmed. My partner and I ordered two of the pizzas dips and some cokes alongside. The speed of the service and preparation of Pi is incredibly quick - from ordering to pizza arriving was mere minutes, not a bad thing per-se as pizza shouldn’t take that long to cook int the wood fire oven! Unfortunately the service we received, whilst being ‘quick’ was ‘too quick’ to be good. Our coke cans were handed over and the waitress waking away before I could even ask for glasses (something I knew I had to ask for sat the three other tables around us had to ask for individually)… not being able to get their attention, I ended up going to the bar to get my own. Pizza arrived and looked good - however was quite honestly one of the blandest I’ve had in a considerable time! I ordered the Chorizo with pickled chilli’s from their menu & my partner the Nduja with honey. I ate about two slices before I succumbed to the fact it wasn’t worth the calories. Noticing that again two of the three tables around us had left a considerable amount of their dough too! The waitress came to take our over half full plates to get the next customer in in rapid fashion - when I expressed that I thought the pizza was fairly poor, she smirked and walked off, where my partner had to find her again a little while later to pay (honestly - the service was soo quick until we’d expressed it wasn’t great food and then… nada). Constructively I’d say put salt in the dough to bring forward some of the flavour, do something with the tomato to bring out more flavour (oregano in the sauce would really elevate this) but also even the chorizo & nduja were so mild in flavour given they’re supposed to be bold! The cooking/wood fire char & texture of the dough was great just no flavour to match the look! I’m disappointed as like I said, I’d seen positive things, but looking at some of the previous negative reviews since - there’s no learning.

Hi Richard, Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback, it pains me to read about the disappointing experience you and your partner had with us. Taking each of your issues raised in turn: - Poor service: very regrettable, particularly when the opposite is often called out by our guests. Great hospitality is what we strive for with every guest - we clearly came up very short here and I'm particularly disappointed by the reaction you describe when the Host collected your plates and you provided feedback that the food was poor. This is not at all representative of how our team is trained, and I apologise unreservedly. This will be raised with the team - the half full plates (and presumably no request for takeaway boxes) should have prompted a visit to the table from a Supervisor or Manager on the shift. Lack of glasses: we made a conscious decision at the outset not to serve glasses with our canned drinks (but always available on request). Similar to the decision to use stemless wine glasses this was in the spirit of our being a fast casual restaurant - the emphasis being on casual. I don't believe there is a right and wrong here - just personal preference - and I get that not everyone will be a fan of this approach. Not providing cutlery was similarly a conscious consideration until we pivoted to cutlery on the table given the volume of requests for it. We'll continue to keep the 'no glasses' policy under review in the same way. - Flavour: lack of flavour is not something we hear too often. We do put salt in our dough and we went through a very rigorous selection process for our tomatoes. While there is some seasonal variability which can impact on flavour the feedback is overwhelmingly positive on the flavour profile of our tomato sauce. The nduja we use is organic and generally loved by our guests; and the same goes for the Gubbeen chorizo - Irish cured artisan chorizo from hand-reared pigs traditionally smoked over beech and oak. We use the best available produce, artisan Irish where available. The notion that there's no learning because of the existence of other earlier reviews that may have raised similar issues is not accurate or fair. We are constantly asking ourselves how we can be better and make subtle changes on a regular basis. It would be naive of us to think that we could ever have 100/100 guests completely happy - that's an impossibility! We do our best, and we keep everything under constant review in the spirit of 'how can we be a little bit better than we were yesterday?'. We can only take comfort from the fact that the vast majority of our reviews - across both restaurant locations - are overwhelmingly positive; it means we are getting it mostly right, most of the time, for most people. You had a disappointing experience with us and for that, again, I apologise. The service point will be addressed as a priority. Best, John

Hugely disappointing experience. Tough base with only a drissle of tomato. Totally devoid of flavour and although we ordered extra oregano it was not included. We asked for some tomato topping and were given a pot of cold tomato sauce which wasn't acceptable. Wine was very poor quality and to add further insult to injury we were given an incorrect bill including orders we didn't have. How much this place has gone down and we certainly won't be back back. A refund would be appreciated and appropriate please.

Hi there, sorry to read of your very disappointing experience - it is far from the great guest experience that we aspire to for everyone who chooses to dine with us. If there is one thing I would ask you to do differently next time you have a disappointing experience in a restaurant, any restaurant, it would be to bring the issue(s) to the attention of your Host - or to seek out the Restaurant Manager - at the time. Posting a negative review on an online forum means that you left the restaurant frustrated, we didn't have the chance to engage with you on your frustrations, and we missed the opportunity to write a great last chapter (or at least the opportunity to reach a place where you might have left the restaurant a little less frustrated than you clearly did). The rush to condemnation is regrettable - one disappointing meal does not a terrible restaurant make. We work really hard every day to make the best pizza we possibly can with the best artisan ingredients - Irish where possible - and to deliver the best guest experience at a very democratic price point for a city centre restaurant. Fortunately, the reviews indicate that that is resonating with the overwhelming majority of our guests but it doesn't change the fact that you had a negative experience for which, once again, I'm really sorry. I hope you will give us another try. My email is john@pipizzas.ie if you want to make contact with me directly. Best, John

The pizza was delicious however the waitress was the most rudest waitress I have ever had. Me and my partner were out on a date and needless to say she killed the vibe. Getting a glass for my drink was a big deal, oh and you want water, another big deal. She ignored us for the whole time we were there. We decided on our own accord to go and stand to pay as she would not come near us. She just pointed the receipt and say together or separate. We didn’t even say we would like to pay, nothing. Needless to say, she did not get a tip. If you are like this to everyone for no reason, you’ll ruin the restaurant on the chefs as the food was fantastic.

Pizza Pi, absolutely great wee spot to visit. Checking online suggested using the walk up app, easily downloaded and checked etc. Thankfully no queue for my visit but having sampled the food, can completely understand why it would get so busy. The pizzas are awesome! Specifically their base, OMG it was such a lovely dough. Fully recommend dropping in for lovely bite to eat in a relaxed atmosphere 👌 Also very reasonable pricing.

We were taken to PI by family members who live in Dublin. Tucked away between a myriad of little restaurants near the mall. As we entered the smell of baking pizza filled the air. The pizza choices were good and we got served relatively quickly for a packed restaurant. We ordered a bacon and cheese pizza and a cider. The service was quick and the pizza arrived within 10 min. I did find it a bit bland but the crust was thin and the filling enough. The restaurant is not really made for sitting at the table for a lengthy dinner turnaround is a priority and we were soon handed the check to leave. All good.

Pizza that has nothing to envy of the best local pizzerias, in the Neapolitan tradition it offers a soft and very digestible dough. We took two margheritas and a spicy one with spectacular salami and peroni pears. The dessert is also excellent which, although called 'pudding', is actually a chocolate cream with caramel and salt. To try!!!

I was in Dublin for a few days and I was craving pizza, well as a Neapolitan I say that when you taste pizza it's hard to believe you're in Ireland and not Naples. The menu, however, has a large British imprint. 😊 However, an excellent pizza and in record time.

Supposedly the best pizza in Dublin, but there's clearly room to grow. The dough's nice, and the place looks good, thanks to what must've been a hefty interior budget. Yet, the pizza disappoints—too floppy, and they don't make it clear about the white pizzas (so check before you order). The crust is somehow both undercooked and burnt. Hard to put into words, but if this is 'Dublin's best,' it's miles away from any Italian pizzeria standard. Really makes you wonder how it got such high ratings.

Sorry to read that we came up short for you - we try to make the best pizza we can, and each day a little better. It's rare that we get negative reviews for our efforts but, again, sorry that we disappointed on this occasion. Delighted that you recognise the effort that has gone in to our fit out, we are extremely proud to have won the RIAI Fit Out Award - and we worked very, very hard to bring it in at less than the cost of a 'typical' fit out - the budget was far from hefty, I can assure you! On the bianca (white) pizza point - we have a very clear key which spells out at the top of the menu (in capital letters), B = BIANCA; and then those pizzas have a capital red 'B' after the pizza name; it's rare that people overlook this, and I'm really not sure what more we can do to make this clear for our guests. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. All the best, John

Stepped into PI George’s Street at a few minutes before 9pm this evening. After waiting patiently at the ‘please wait to be seated’ sign one of their seemingly in charge staff eventually sidled over, tablet in hand, and rebuffed our attempts to get a table for two. Evidently there were four tables in the queue! And closing soon. This from a pizza place that claims last orders at 10pm on a Friday. There were two vacant tables in our immediate vision and who knows what going on at the back. Shoddy hospitality, surly new staff (they used to be great btw) clearly looking to get off shift early. We were regulars but won’t be back.

I'm really sorry to read of your frustrations. I can assure you that we are not in the business of turning away guests. Having looked into this I can confirm that the entire back section of the restaurant was seated; the vacant tables were waiting for people who were ahead of you in the queue and who were on their way to the restaurant; and, as you say, there were still after that people ahead of you in the queue. The simple fact is it was a Friday night, the restaurant was at full capacity, and we couldn't accommodate you as a walk-in unfortunately. In all the circumstances 'shoddy hospitality' does not seem a fair charge. As regulars, you would know that this is very far from the typical PI guest experience. I do hope you'll give us the benefit of the doubt, and that you'll give us another try. All the best, John

I am writing this only to back up a review in February by Charles R, which has been responded to now. I am definitely NOT a “customer is always right” person and mostly despair of negative reviews on this forum. I was with Charles R that night and we were indeed at the receiving end of shoddy hospitality. While we waited to get attention I ended up having to hold the door open for a staff member who was rushing out, and back, with a pile of boxes for the waiting Deliveroo people. No thanks. Not even a nod. That probably didn’t help to set the tone when we were finally seen by the person who dismissed us with what I can only describe as a snooty attitude. I appreciate that the restaurant was full, and I do not expect to swan in anywhere and get seated at the drop of a hat, but the customer experience that night was indeed shoddy!!!!!

There are two vegan options on the menu, one is a plain marina pizza, the other is a lovely 'Mediterranean' pizza. I have not tried the marina one, but i have had the mediterranean one twice and it is just delicious, theres really no other word for it! Great pizza base and crust, lovely sauce base, with some veggies and pesto! I really appreciate that there is clearly effort put into the flavour of the vegan pizza, and that its not just some random vegan cheese that won't properly act like cheese. Both times i have been with a non-vegan and they have also absolutely raved about their respective pizzas (nduja and the pork + pineapple). plus, the pizzas come out really quickly! There is a lovely atmosphere inside. I really look forward to my next visit :)

I visited Pi this month and was really looking forward to trying the pizzas after so much hype. There was a 15 minute wait for a table and after ordering, the pizza arrived very quickly. It was pretty good, the dough was particularly nice but the toppings were the same as most pizza restaurants in Dublin. However, the service was very rushed. The bill was brought over after we finished, this happens in many restaurants in Dublin without asking so I was not put off by it. A few minutes later, the waitress came over with the card machine and asked if we wanted to pay together or separately. We had not asked to pay at this point and had only been finished our meal for less than 10 minutes. About 5 minutes after paying, we were told that the table was needed and that we had to leave. I have no problem leaving tables if they are booked, however there are no reservations in Pi. We were also not told before sitting down that there was a time limit, and I felt like the whole process was very rushed in order to have the highest turnover possible. It was a Thursday night in January, the pizza is not cheap, and I didn’t think the customer service would be so poor. If you want to try Pi, I would suggest getting a takeaway so you are not rushed!

Laura, I'm really sorry to read of your experience with us. We strive for nothing short of great hospitality for every guest. On this occasion, it appears we fell well short of that. Our service should never feel 'rushed'. It is correct that we don't take reservations. It is the case that people can put their names down on the wait list at the door; we give them an estimated wait time for a table; they go off for a drink or a stroll, and we text them when their table is ready. In that sense the table may have been 'needed', and what you outline above is our system, but the key thing is that our guests should never feel rushed. So we got that badly wrong with you. I do hope you'll give us another try, I assure you this is not how representative of PI's commitment to great hospitality and great guest experiences. All the best, John
