We were not blown away. I enquired of dogs were accommodated inside but was told we could sit outside, I'm happy enough with that but there are very few places in the town who do allow dogs in and this could boost this place. I...had chowder, this was full of fish including salmon and prawns, however it lacked seasoning. The wheaten bread was dry and most likely bought in, butter was out of the fridge and too cold to spread. My wife had mussels and enjoyed them. Minor issues with food but the staff were lovely and we were pleasantly looked after.More

Had lunch there today, the 16th of November, 2022. Had the Armada platter, and my wife had the chowder; we then had two coffees. The food was wonderful, the atmosphere was great, the staff were super, and the service was super. Being a travel editor,...I visit many establishments around the world. This pub in Donegal town is one of the very best.More

We had an early dinner here and enjoyed the outdoor seating that was in the front of the bar. Service was quite attentive. The menu had a nice selection of entrees. Our order was taken quickly and the food was brought to the table promptly....If memory serves they have some special prices if you arrive before 5 PM. You do need to go into the bar in order to pay. The restaurant location is right in the heart of Donegal.More

I'm a resident of Donegal town and a friend of mine went to this pub on Sunday morning and was refused service by an angry man that she presumes was the manager. She literally moved to Donegal two weeks ago from London and hasn't actually...been in this pub for over 2 years when she was last visiting me on holiday. He claims she was there last week, which she wasn't of course but he won't listen. Subsequently when my sister went in to speak to him in the afternoon he again claimed that my friend was some sort of trouble-maker from the previous week. A totally unprofessional character and won't even entertain a conversation by which we could prove he is wrong. I'm pretty sure they would have CCTV or even bar receipts that could back up what I'm saying. Very poor standard of behaviour, definitely won't be getting any of my business, that of my family or friends in future, will steer well clear.More

We enjoyed dinner of a whole fresh fish of the day and chowder at the Olde Castle Bar. We sat out front and enjoyed the nice day. Service was a bit slow.

We will never return to Old Castle Bar in Donegal town. We had a horrible experience at this restaurant. The waitress was very unfriendly food was average and very expensive had to wait a long time to get served. There were very loud and obnoxious...customers at the table beside us. They were so loud we could not hear each other talk. It got so bad I had to go outside because it was stressful and was making me feel sick. I even vomited from the stress. I ask if we could get a table that was quiet and thy did nothing also they allowed the loud obnoxious customers to continue with their bad conduct. This was the first and last time we will ever eat at this horrific restaurant.More

We had dinner in this large pub in the centre of Donegal that justly famous for it's good food. It was a Monday night but still very busy and as they (at the time) didn't accept reservations, we chanced our luck and managed to get...a table within 30 minutes. Fortunately, a very efficient restaurant manager took names as people entered and called them out in very strict rotation - no queue jumping here! That said, the non-Brits were a little perplexed at the required process and we had fun watching people working how and what to order at the bar. Once seated, the food arrived promptly and I had a good chowder and very good steak, though my wife's fish & chips was quite soggy and seemed to render her with a stomach ache later in the evening. Plenty of food too, you won't go hungry and you might have to pass on the delicious looking deserts. Overall, it's a venue I'd recommend.More

I have been here a number of times and the food was always nice. This time however, my chowder only tasted of cream and it took a long time to get rid of that taste. Besides that, the chowder had enough seafood in it and...my partner's choice, salmon and prawns on brown bread, was nice, apart from the fact, common to my chowder, that the bread was too sweet. Also, the lady manager (owner?) should relax a bit in the treatment of personnel, as she was hyper everytime she talked -well, actually gave out more than anything else- to staff (especially a waiter in his late teens/early 20s).More

We enjoyed a beautiful meal for four people. Everything was delicious. Unfortunately, we found the staff to be unfriendly, miserable and disinterested.

Love the old style interior from the moment we walked in. Staff very attentive directed us to the table immediately and were promptly back with drinks order and taking our food order. I ordered the Salmon and Prawn open sandwich and my wife the Caesar...Salad. Food came out within minutes as both were cold and salad based. Beautifully presented and really good proportions, my wife commented to the waiter at the end that it was one of the best Caesar Salads she has had and I would agree that the Open Sandwich was not my best ever but definitely top 5!! Price was a little on the steep side but in the current climate it is to be expected.More

My husband and I planned a short break away to Donegal after we got married a month ago. We did some research on restaurants in the area and found the Olde Castle Bar to be one of the most popularly mentioned ones to try. I...tried to book a few weeks in advance but their voicemail said it was only taking walk-in bookings so we decided we'd try to get a table when we arrived in Donegal itself. At approximately 4pm, I entered the restaurant and was greeted by a friendly young male staff member who said they still only took walk-in bookings and explained if we were due to come back later that there might be a small wait but should be able to secure a table if we didn't mind hanging on a bit. Whilst he was explaining this to me another more senior-looking staff member in a blue shirt interrupted us and asked if I was looking for a table that night, which I said I was. He then told me that they would not have anything at all that night because they had a large booking and said "all tables will be full" which I thought was strange of him to say as they only took walk ins? I then asked him was he just saying not to bother even trying later and he said "yes". Deflated, we decided to eat elsewhere. The next night we again tried to get a table. I had to walk halfway down to see if I could find a member of restaurant staff. On this occasion, I had the misfortune of meeting the same man who, before I even opened my mouth gave me a full glance up and down which I found extremely creepy and unsettling. I asked if they had any tables and on this occasion they did, but I was a little distressed at his initial approach and sat at the bar for a drink for a drink while we waited and I told my husband what had happened. We would have left only that another staff member brought us to our table and took our orders for the rest of the evening so the whole night wasn't ruined. The food was spectacular, the steak special was as I had hoped and the dauphinoise potato is something you have to try. We skipped starters to save ourselves for a dessert and the Creme Brulee was also very nice. However, on two occasions in between our courses I did notice the same creepy guy peering at us as we shared a little peck on the cheek - it was our honeymoon and we were toasting each other! Again I felt very uneasy that he was leering at a distance. I would have given the restaurant and (most) of the staff top marks for a very pleasant meal and overall experience but someone needs to have a word with certain members of staff on their approach and conduct in a customer-facing business as even now I'm getting creep alert shivers!More

Ah where to start - Saturday evening 10th September 4 of us went into dine. Specials board was €28 for rib eye steak and dauphonise potatoes. Onions and tomatoes. When it was brought down you would need a magnifying 🔎 for the tomatoes and the...steak. I had to asj for extra chips. Which i might add were rotten. When asked if all was okay . We told them the steak tasted of lamb and the potatoes were sour. No apology. He offered us our starters and wine back there was nothing wrong with them. Now we are in here at least once a month and never ever been treated so badly. Not the waiters fault. They get the brunt so we asked for the manager and they didn't come to the table. We had to go looking for them to pay. Def will NOT be backMore

Lots of room for everyone with seating indoors and out. Located across the street from the ruins of a castle. We enjoyed a drink and lunch along with travellers from across the globe. Children most welcome - if eating inside asking for a seat further...back in the pub than just inside the entrance.More
