The food was very good (haggis starter was excellent), but the service was dreadful, and the prices outrageous. Sorry, but won’t be going back

Came here just the other week. Staff were friendly and helpful. Beer garden was okay, quaint but okay! Place was clean I think

This was my first time back at the "Chip" in 35 years (having been at Glasgow University at that time) and I have to say I found it disappointing. A friend and I went for Sunday lunch. The current menu is fussy, too intricate and...not good value. Service was average I wonder whether the Chip is living on past reputation ?More

We travelled to the restaurant from outside the city as a treat for my birthday on the strength of reputation and good reviews. On the plus side, there was a good atmosphere in both the bar and restaurant and the dining area was visually appealing....However, we were stuck into a wee corner on our own. The starters were minimalist and stone cold. At £15 for 3 scallops, I at least expect them to be warm and you could barely see my husband’s pigeon breast. Not enjoyable at all. We did mention the temperature of the food and were told that they would “sort something out”. The mains came a long time later and were thankfully a bit warmer, but otherwise inmemorable. There was no reduction in the bill or offer of a drink, so we were left wondering what “sorting something out” meant. Doesn’t really matter. We won’t be back.More

We looked at the Michelin bib accounts of worthy restaurants and having had a fabulous meal at The Grange Inn at St Andrews which was on the list we thought that as the Ubiquitous Chip was also there we had struck gold....how wrong we were....Once we were seated a very nice polite and welcoming waitress took our orders and bought us drinks. We had ordered soft drinks for our starters which for my husband was a duck egg and custard which he found ok but not great and I had a lovely salmon tartare that was very nice.....but after 45 minutes wait for our mains which consisted of halibut and for me a rib eye steak we were still waiting .....when we said we had to leave fairly soon our food materialised... the halibut was ordinary and came with a gloopy sauce and very chalky fir potatoes, my steak came with some tinned watery mushrooms and a blob of unknown mustard ...the steak was over cooked tasteless and fatty but the accompanying tomato salad that I had to pay more for was better. We did not stay for desserts, with one glass of Merlot for me complete with the dregs of the bottle this meal was nearly £100. We like to eat out and have found some wonderful restaurants all over the world as we travel extensively but I’m afraid the Chip will not be getting our seal of approvalMore

Found this venue on trip advisor. Loved the ambiance, food and service. The special was the lobster - just wonderful. Good selection (maybe too many) of wines. Food menu much more focussed yet diverse.

Stopped by the Chip for a drink today. Ordered a pint of Guinness for me and a French martini for my wife. The barman proceeded to put cassis into the shaker instead of chambord. I pointed out to him that casssis is black currant flavour...and the cocktail requires raspberry flavoured liqueur. He replied that it was the same colour as chambord ( it’s not quite) that chambord was very difficult to source at the moment and that they Taste the same. They don’t. On that basis he could have substituted white rum for the vodka and orange juice for the pineapple juice. They’re not quite the same colour but ‘Hey!) It’s not his fault that the bar can’t source ingredients but just say that you haven’t got the stuff and can’t make the cocktail. Tell me to choose something else and don’t b#££&#%£ me. Charged around eight quid for it too. Jokers!More
