For my last night in Glasgow, we wanted to go somewhere special and after an extensive internet search, decided on Hutchesons City Grill. There were two factors which took us there. First was the fact that we both love buildings with a history: Hutchesons was...built in the early 1800s and was designed by one of the great Glasgow architects, David Hamilton, to replace the old Hutchesons Hospital and as a memorial to the founders - George and Thomas Hutcheson, two of Glasgow's wealthiest merchants who had previously founded Hutchesons Hospital at the Trongrate in 1650. Second was its menu: the menu is short and comprises ‘innovative dishes using the best Scottish produce, from locally sourced, dry-aged Scotch beef, to the fresh seafood found along the vast coasts of Scotland.’ The building outside is lovely, one of Glasgow’s many beautiful buildings. Inside it is stunning, with beautiful stained glass windows and intricate double height ceiling. Our choice from the menu was to share the starter of pan seared scallops – succulent and perfectly cooked – my friend chose the Atlantic cod and I went for the lemon sole – both presented beautifully with accompanying vegetables and both tasting wonderful. We finished with the cheeseboard with port followed by liqueur coffees. I’m not sure who the gentleman was who served us, may have been the maitre d’ or the manager, but he took a personal interest in serving us, advising us of the menu, talking us through the history of the restaurant and ensuring we had a perfect last meal together. Which we did.More
