Our family came to the UK to celebrate the life of Iris, mother and grandmother who was born in the UK, emigrated to Canada in 1950, and passed away in 2015. Our trip ended with us all enjoying the Hogmanay festivities in Edinburgh. How could we not try a restaurant called "Iris" when we found it by searching on Trip... More

We could only get a reservation early which allowed us to choose from the 3 course lunch menu. The food was of excellent quality and was really delicious. The service was terrific. Would certainly enjoy dining here again.

A perfectly enjoyable lunch with colleagues was spoiled by a member of staff smoking near the open kitchen door. We had to request on three occasions during the meal that the door be closed. However, by that time the place was so full of smoke i had to make a rushed departure before coffee. Asthma suffers would be well advised... More

Have always been a fan of Iris but with so many new places opening in Edinburgh I haven't been so often recently. Staff were still great and the food was good. Cauli soup and crayfish tail starters were good And turkey roulade main was very tasty. The only negative about Iris is the heat in the place, they really need... More

I visited this restaurant on a busy Saturday night with my Girlfriend. We travelled from Leeds and had the description of the restaurant sounded romantic and menu looked very appetising when researching places to eat. We were greeted by a waitress who invited us to sit on a small table next to the door, My partner asked her if there... More

We had not eaten here for some time but looked forward to enjoying a similar standard to that as on our previous visit. Unfortunately, we all thought the starters and main courses to be poor quality and not really hot. A disappointing experience but friendly staff.

I had a very enjoyable and reasonably priced Christmas lunch yesterday with a friend. There was a very nice atmosphere, the staff were friendly and, most importantly the food was fresh, well-presented and tasty. Iris is well worth a visit.

Description
Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
