Out with my brother and mother and looking for somewhere to sit down and have a bite to eat when we wondered down Thistle street and decided to go into this doorway and enter the world or Iris. Compact but opens up into a larger dining room where we were seated and the very attentive staff served us drinks and... More

I absolutely adore this restaurant. Have been coming since it opened and it never disappoints. They always have the nicest staff and you are never rushed out of your table. The food is excellent and if going for the lunch menu, terrific value.

Went for the set lunch £18.95 for 3 courses, food was great, had chicken which was very moist, only thing we had to ask for veg. The waiter was friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and will go back.

We popped in for lunch on a busy Saturday in Edinburgh. We went for the lunch menu which was £15.95/£18.95 for 2 or 3 courses. My partner started with the mussels in a white wine cream sauce which he really enjoyed. For mains, I had the chicken supreme with mushrooms. For me the sauce was too sweet and slightly boozy... We went for lunch, and we love it. The lady take really care about us and help us to choose from the menu. We went for sharing dishes and all of them was really tasty. Nice place, well decorated. Wine list was nice, with enough options by the glass as well. The best dish was the chicken than the lady... More

Ate here recently on a Saturday night while visiting Edinburgh and very pleased with both the food and the service at Iris. Arrived on a busy Saturday night and seated at a table by the door while a better table was cleaned and offered the menus to peruse. Once seated we were given a bread basket and offered some tap... First time I have been to the Iris and I am sure it won't be the last. The staff were fantastic. The chef even changed one of our meals to suit. Fantastic service and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend a try.

Food: I had the king prawns for starters and the ribeye steak for main meal. The prawns were meaty and were covered in delicious juices. The steak was a winner(!) as it was quite large and tender. Go for the tasty veg and potatoes sides too. Service: Very friendly staff which made the experience more enjoyable. Atmosphere: a small sized... More

Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
