This restaurant with stone walls and small wooden tables is the gem of the city. From the starter to the main and desert, every bite was a flavour bomb. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere indescribable. I wholeheartedly recommend everyone to go and try the fresh, tasty local products that are served with style and politeness.

Service overall was very good, however a little slow at first. Food was excellent, we throughly enjoyed it. Had the wood pidgeon and the scallops to start, both were very tasty. We then had the lamb and the beef for main, both were cooked very well and we would highly recommend. For dessert we shared the chocolate tart, which was... More

My wife and I were in Edinburgh the last weekend in November, which is the Thanksgiving holiday back at our home in America. Thanksgiving is all about food, so we felt the need for a nice dinner, and the Grain Store had been recommended by friends in London. We arrived for our 6:30 reservation and were the first customers of... More

My husband and I had a three-day visit to Edinburgh and we wanted to try something really nice and Scottish for dinner. I am so glad we picked the Grain Store! We had a starter and two main courses (one was lamb and the other one was venison) and they were all extremely good. They make the best potato fondue... More

Having pre booked were seated opposite the exit which was busy. The restaurant was cold, dark and lacked any atmosphere. Started with oysters and scallops which were very good, so we all had high expectations following reviews we had read. Main courses did not deliver, three courses sent back in eaten. The lamb dish was mainly just fat and sinew... More

I just had dinner here while passing through Edinburgh on business and I have to say it was a lovely experience. I was accommodated right away although I had no reservation and it was a busy Friday night. The atmosphere and restaurant itself are very nice and comfortable. The staff were attentive but not in your face and the food... More

After booking a table at The Grain Store we came across a very mealy mouthed review in The Telegraph. We almost cancelled. That would have been our loss. The whole experience was first class. It seems the Telegraph reviewer was too anxious to display his culinary knowledge and unable to address the meal he was enjoying. We were a party... More

We visited this place on a cold Thursday night. The restaurant is warm and welcoming. The ambience was good. Stone walls, candle lights, The food and wine was good. The only thing i'd say is that he staff were a little too attentive. It was prob well intended but I was with the wife on a romantic break and wanted... More

We had a wonderful dinner at the Grain Store. The service was very good, the wine superb and the food was excellent. The restaurant has lovely stone walls with nooks and crannies that create a quaint and romantic atmosphere.

Nice little place on the first floor, has simple but lovely decor. Lots of space between tables but try and get one next to the windows. Food was really good, couldn't fault a single dish.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
