Booked a few days before (glad we did it was very busy). We were seated straightaway and noticed that there were only two people front of house. I don't think I've seen two people work harder and with a smile. The food was fabulous, well cooked, tasty and service exceeded expectations. I had fish pie which was delicious and cheesecake... After stumbling across the Olive Branch last August, it's become a firm favourite of ours and we made a couple of visits here for dinner over the New year period. It was just as good as we remembered and we were not disappointed. The menu is narrow but the dished are of excellent quality and as a vegetarian I have... More

We visited for lunch before going to the playhouse. I was glad I had booked as it did get very busy as I had noted from other reviews. We were seated at a window table which is a must to people watch! We were given a jug of water with some lime and leaves in it, a fresh lovely touch.... More

The 3-course Christmas lunch was exceptionally outstanding. I don't usually give a restaurant such a high rating but this one has really got my liking. Starters were nice although they were not as special as the mains and desserts. The turkey was not like the traditional one but it gave me a real surprise as the way it had been... More

This was my third visit to the Olive Branch and this lunch was the best meal that I have had there. The strudel main with rocket salad and chunky chips was spot on. I just had to clear the plate even though that meant leaving less space for my dessert of lemon posset , which was delicious. My friends were... More

Attractive venue, good menu and quality food at a reasonable price. Staff were very helpful and cheerie. When we asked for bread fish instead of battered fish it was no trouble for them to provide it. Will go back to this Bistro.

I had heard good things about the Olive Branch and this didn't disappoint. The staff were very friendly and really seemed to get on well. The food was great - I had the burger and it was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. Great stuff.

We had a long day walking around Edinburgh and eventually tried to decide where to eat when we happened upon the very aptly named olive branch. Lovely meal and friendly staff.

Met the boys in Edinburgh to explore the Christmas Markets, but hadn't factored in all these folk need to eat, so we trudged up and down Rose Street then George Street to find a welcoming restaurant for five adults and a bairn, to no avail. We should have booked! My boys (Edinburgh residents) suggested we go off piste down Leith... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
