Managed to book a table last minute. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Clean restaurant and facilities. Menu was well laid out, with a decent array to choose from. Our food was excellent quality and very well cooked, and also arrived promptly. Very well priced for a major city. Would definitely dine here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to someone

Unfortunately had to send my dish back as the steak was very gristly and chewy. Having said that, my other three companions were very happy with their choices. Stafff were good and apologetic about the steak, but the wait for my meal to be replaced spoilt the ambience as I was by then eating alone. Probably a one off but... More

We had an amazing meal at the Olive Branch Bistro on Saturday evening. I had been before but years ago, so was unsure if it would still be as good - luckily I was not disappointed. As soon as you walk in there is a lovely buzz and the restaurant has lots of charm. We were sat at a small... More

If we could give this 6 stars, we would. The food was tremendous -- full of flavours, even down to the salad. We had linguine which was on the specials menu, and burger and chips. We had a side of garlic green beans. We can highly recommend all of those. We finished with coffee and hot chocolate, again, both excellent.... More

We were recommended this spot through friends, and with it being just a two minute walk from our b&b it would've been rude not to go. I had the lamb shank and oooohhh myyyy... it was incredible. Melted in the mouth! The chorizo and balsamic dressing was perfectly balanced and the roast potatoes were unreal!! I didn't walk out, I... More

Cozy bistro located on Broughton Street between Leith Walk and London Street. Stopped for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Busy with lunch crowd but I was seated immediately. Staff was friendly and service good. Their menu is small, but has a good variety, and they also have chalkboard specials. The King Prawn sandwich was wonderful and reasonably priced. Will definitely... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
