Service is lacklustre (prepare to be ignored), afternoon tea is disappointing. Two very tiny sandwiches each, too many sweet things, none of which notable or all that appealing- we left almost the entire middle layer, having sampled one or two and decided against finishing. Not one to generally write negative reviews but the few times I've been here I've had... More

Only popped in for a drink at 5.30 on a weeknight - disinterested bar staff made for a not very enjoyable visit. Took ages to get served, ignored by one barman.

It's a bit of a mouth and trousers establishment, heavy on its opinion of itself but light on its basic delivery. Certainly it had attracted a lot of customers when we were there, which was early on a Friday evening, the start of any restaurant's busy period. One of us ordered mussels, a traditional choice in Edinburgh. Sorry, got no... More

The food was very disappointing. Having been here on numerous occasions I expected much better. Ordered the Devon crab on toast and was disappointed with what I received; a slice of bread barely toasted with a thin layer of crab and a wedge of lemon which cost £8.50 and was very disappointed at what I received for the price of... The restaurant was very accommodating and fitted us in despite a mix up ( our fault)Not like the restaurant next door. !! The menu had a varied choice and was value for money. The service was good and the restaurant had a good atmosphere. We had another excellent night in a great city

Group of seven for breakfast. No acknowledgement by staff on arrival; 25 minutes before a waiter took only our drinks order - despite asking for our food order it was a further 20 minute wait before anyone came. Hot drinks, when they eventually arrived, were lukewarm and tea stewed. Food eventually arrived almost an hour after our arrival! No option... More

Myself and my boyfriend had booked a table here for valentines day. Although seats had been allocated for us, they happily agreed to let us sit further back near the bar which was nice as I would guess it would be a busy day for bookings. Considering the specialised valentines menu was quite expensive, the options on it were uninspiring.... More

Called in Browns for lunch whilst on a long weekend in Edinburgh. Seated promptly at the back of the restaurant which is much bigger than the frontage would lead you to believe. We both chose a glass of wine (1 merlot 1 Chardonnay) and a club sandwich from the varied menu. Arrived within a reasonable length of time presented nicely... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
